"Financial analyst" is one of the most crowded titles in any database. It covers FP&A analysts who build budgets, corporate development analysts who model acquisitions, public-sector budget analysts, equity research associates and credit analysts at banks. Search it plainly and you also get financial advisors, insurance agents who call themselves financial professionals, accountants and data analysts with a finance client.

The work decides the vocabulary, so start there. Below are ten strings by kind of financial analysis, and what LinkedIn, Indeed and Google support as of October 2026. For accounting roles, which share many of the same profiles, see Boolean search strings for accountants.

  • CFA. CFA Institute's CFA Program page describes three levels and, for the charter, at least 4,000 hours of relevant work experience completed in no fewer than 36 months, as of October 2026. Candidates write "CFA Level II candidate," "passed Level I" or "CFA charterholder"; search all of them if the credential matters.
  • FPAC. The Association for Financial Professionals awards the Certified Corporate FP&A Professional (FPAC), which AFP says must be recertified every three years with 45 credits.
  • CMA. The Institute of Management Accountants awards the Certified Management Accountant, a two-part exam that fits FP&A and cost work.
  • FMVA. The Corporate Finance Institute's Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) is a self-paced online course program with no formal prerequisites. It shows study, not experience.
  • Series 86 and 87. FINRA's Research Analyst exams apply to sell-side research analysts at member firms. They are irrelevant to corporate FP&A.

Ten Boolean strings by kind of financial analysis

Swap in the planning system, industry and metro from your own intake; these are examples.

FP&A and corporate finance

1. FP&A analyst — LinkedIn general search
("financial analyst" OR "fp&a analyst" OR "financial planning and analysis") AND (budgeting OR forecasting) AND ("variance analysis" OR "budget vs actual") NOT ("financial advisor" OR "wealth management" OR recruiter)

2. FP&A on a planning platform — LinkedIn Recruiter, Job titles + Keywords filters
("financial analyst" OR "senior financial analyst" OR "fp&a analyst") AND (anaplan OR "adaptive planning" OR hyperion OR onestream) AND (forecast OR "operating plan")

3. Senior FP&A, business partner — LinkedIn general search
("senior financial analyst" OR "fp&a manager" OR "finance business partner") AND ("annual operating plan" OR "long range plan" OR "board deck") AND (headcount OR opex OR "unit economics")

4. Corporate development and modeling — LinkedIn general search
("corporate development analyst" OR "corporate finance analyst" OR "financial analyst") AND ("financial modeling" OR dcf OR "three-statement") AND (acquisitions OR "m&a" OR valuation)

Credentials, research and public sector

5. Analyst with a finance credential — LinkedIn Recruiter, Keywords filter
("financial analyst" OR "fp&a analyst") AND ("chartered financial analyst" OR "cfa level" OR "cfa charterholder" OR fpac OR "certified management accountant" OR fmva) NOT ("medical assistant")

6. Equity research associate — LinkedIn general search
("equity research associate" OR "research analyst" OR "equity research analyst") AND ("series 86" OR "series 87" OR "cfa level") AND (bloomberg OR factset OR "capital iq")

7. Public-sector budget analyst — Indeed Smart Sourcing
("budget analyst" OR "fiscal analyst" OR "financial analyst") AND skill: ("budget preparation" OR budgeting) AND (county OR municipal OR "public sector" OR "state agency")

8. FP&A analyst by degree and skills — Indeed Smart Sourcing
("financial analyst" OR "fp&a analyst") AND fieldofstudy: (finance OR accounting OR economics) AND skill: ("financial modeling" OR forecasting)

Search-engine X-ray

9. Public profiles by planning tool and metro — Google X-ray
site:linkedin.com/in ("financial analyst" OR "financial planning and analysis") "anaplan" "charlotte" -jobs -recruiter

10. Public resumes with FP&A work — Google X-ray, filetype search
filetype:pdf "financial analyst" resume "variance analysis" ("forecasting" OR "budgeting") -template -sample

What LinkedIn, Indeed and Google actually support

As of October 2026, LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires AND, OR and NOT in capitals, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. The ampersand in FP&A and M&A is not a dependable search character, so always pair "fp&a" with "financial planning and analysis" and "m&a" with "acquisitions." LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the Boolean-capable filters and warns that very long queries can cause problems.

Indeed's Smart Sourcing guide documents a skill: field and the fieldofstudy: and school: education fields, which strings 7 and 8 use. Google's search operators page documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR; check whether the OR block in an X-ray changes the results before relying on it.

Narrowing by industry and business model

FP&A work looks different by business model. A SaaS analyst writes about ARR, churn and bookings; a manufacturing analyst writes about standard cost, plant spend and capex; a healthcare analyst writes about payer mix and volumes. Adding the client's vocabulary as a block, such as (arr OR churn OR bookings), finds analysts who can talk to the client's operators in the first week.

For seniority, look for "owned the forecast," "presented to the CFO," "built the model" and "partnered with" over "assisted with," "updated templates" and "pulled reports." LinkedIn's premium search filters list Years of Experience and Seniority Level as Recruiter and Sales Navigator filters.

False positives worth excluding with NOT

  • Financial advisors and planners. "Financial advisor," "wealth management," "financial planner" and "registered representative" profiles are about clients' money. FINRA's BrokerCheck is where those registrations are looked up, which is a hint they are a different job.
  • Accountants, for forward-looking roles. "Staff accountant," "general ledger" and "month-end close" profiles share Excel and ERP names. Keep them when the client values close experience; exclude them when the role is planning.
  • Data analysts. Analysts in finance departments write SQL and Power BI. See Boolean search strings for data analysts if the client actually wants reporting.
  • Insurance and banking sales. "Financial services representative," "loan officer" and "insurance agent" profiles use finance words without analysis.
  • The CMA collision. Certified Medical Assistants write CMA too. Spell the credential out or add finance terms.

An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.

Intake: A growing software company needs a senior financial analyst to own the headcount and operating expense forecast in Adaptive Planning and support the annual plan.

Pass 1: "financial analyst" AND forecasting: a huge list mixing bank credit analysts, advisors, accountants and analysts at companies of every type.

Pass 2: ("senior financial analyst" OR "fp&a analyst" OR "financial planning and analysis") AND ("adaptive planning" OR anaplan) AND (forecast OR "operating plan") NOT ("financial advisor" OR "wealth management"): relevant, but heavy with manufacturing and retail FP&A.

Pass 3: add AND (saas OR arr OR bookings OR headcount). Those terms tend to come from analysts who forecast a subscription business. The list is short enough to call, and the screen asks them to walk through a forecast miss and what they changed.

The planning system narrowed by tool; the business-model words narrowed by fit. For FP&A, the second usually matters more to the hiring manager.

What a search cannot verify

A string can find someone who lists the right planning tool and credential. It cannot show whether they built the model or filled in someone else's, whether they can defend a forecast to a skeptical executive, or whether a CFA level is passed or merely planned. The financial analyst phone screen questions test that depth, and the interview guide for finance roles covers the later rounds.

Questions people ask

How do I keep financial advisors out of a financial analyst search?

Exclude "financial advisor," "wealth management" and "financial planner" with NOT, and require analyst vocabulary such as forecasting, variance analysis or financial modeling. Advisors work with individual clients' money; analysts work on a company's numbers or on securities research.

Should I require the CFA for a financial analyst role?

Rarely. The CFA charter requires passing three exam levels and, according to CFA Institute, 4,000 hours of relevant work experience over at least 36 months, so most analysts are candidates rather than charterholders. For corporate FP&A roles it is a bonus; for research and investment roles the client may care more. Use it as an optional OR term.

What is the difference between FP&A and accounting for search purposes?

Accountants record and close what happened; FP&A analysts budget, forecast and explain what is likely to happen. Their profiles share Excel and ERP names, so require planning words such as forecast, budget and variance, and exclude accounting titles when the client wants forward-looking work.

Does CMA on a profile mean management accountant?

Usually, in finance. The Institute of Management Accountants awards the Certified Management Accountant, which suits FP&A work. But CMA also stands for Certified Medical Assistant, so pair it with finance terms or spell it out to avoid healthcare profiles.
