"Mechanical" is a broad word in a resume database. It pulls in auto and diesel mechanics, HVAC service technicians, mechanical contractors' installers and maintenance staff, alongside the engineers a client actually wants. And "mechanical engineer" itself covers jobs as different as designing a medical device enclosure, sizing chillers for a hospital, running finite element analysis on a bracket and keeping a stamping line running.
The specialty decides the vocabulary. Below are ten strings organized by the kind of mechanical work, and what LinkedIn, Indeed and Google support as of October 2026. For the operators themselves, see Boolean search strings for recruiters.
Specialties, tools and credentials that change what a mechanical search finds
| Specialty | Terms candidates write | Common titles |
|---|---|---|
| Product and machine design | SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, DFM | Design engineer, product design engineer |
| Building HVAC and plumbing | Revit, load calculations, ASHRAE, Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP | Mechanical engineer, HVAC engineer, MEP engineer |
| Analysis | FEA, CFD, ANSYS, Abaqus, Nastran, Fluent | Analysis engineer, thermal engineer, CAE engineer |
| Manufacturing | PFMEA, lean, Six Sigma, CNC, injection molding, fixtures | Manufacturing engineer, process engineer |
- PE licensure runs through NCEES and the state boards. The FE exam is described by NCEES as generally the first step toward a PE license. NCEES's PE exam page lists three mechanical modules as of October 2026: HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, and Thermal and Fluids Systems. The license itself is issued by a state board; NCEES keeps a directory of member boards, and each board runs its own lookup.
- EIT and EI mean the same stage. After passing the FE, candidates may hold a state certificate called engineer in training (EIT) or engineer intern (EI), depending on the state. Search both.
- CAD certifications. Dassault's SOLIDWORKS program includes the CSWA (associate) and CSWP; its page now calls the CSWP "SOLIDWORKS Design Professional," while many candidates still write Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional.
- GD&T certification. ASME runs the GDTP certification against the Y14.5 standard, at Technologist and Senior levels. It is uncommon, so treat it as a bonus.

What LinkedIn, Indeed and Google actually support
As of October 2026, LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. That matters here because engineers write "tolerance stack," "stack-up" and "tolerance analysis" for the same work; write the variants out. Symbols such as the ampersand in GD&T are not reliable search terms anywhere, so pair them with a spelled-out phrase. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the Boolean-capable filters and warns that very long queries can cause problems.
Indeed's Boolean
guide documents a skill: field and education fields, school: and
fieldofstudy:, which is how string 8 targets the degree. Google's
search operators page documents quotes,
site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR, so check once whether the OR
block in an X-ray changes the results.
Narrowing by industry and ownership
Industry matters almost as much as specialty. A design engineer from consumer electronics, one from heavy equipment and one from medical devices all use SolidWorks, but the medical device engineer also knows design controls and the heavy equipment engineer knows weldments and fatigue. Add an industry block such as ("medical device" OR "design controls") only when the client says it is a must-have.
Ownership words help with seniority: "designed," "released to production," "owned the design" and "led the redesign" tend to come from people who made the decisions, while "assisted," "drafted" and "updated drawings" tend to come from drafters and junior engineers. LinkedIn's premium search filters add Years of Experience in Recruiter and Sales Navigator; on a free account, the ownership words do that job.
False positives worth excluding with NOT
- Mechanics and technicians. "Mechanic," "technician," "installer" and "maintenance" profiles mention mechanical systems constantly. Exclude them, and require a design or analysis tool.
- HVAC service staff, for design roles. HVAC technicians list the same equipment engineers size. See the HVAC technician screening questions if the client actually needs field service.
- The PE collision. "PE" also means physical education, private equity and polyethylene. Never search it alone.
- Drafters and designers, when the role needs an engineer. "Mechanical designer" and "CAD drafter" profiles list the same software. Keep them when the client wants detailing; exclude them when the role needs engineering judgment or a license path.
- Vendor sales. CAD and simulation resellers' "application engineers" and "sales engineers" list every tool. Exclude "sales" and "reseller."
A worked example: three passes on an HVAC design search
An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.
Intake: A consulting engineering firm designs HVAC for schools and hospitals. It needs a mechanical engineer who does load calculations and Revit modeling, ideally with a PE license or close to one.
Pass 1: "mechanical engineer" AND hvac: a very large list full of
HVAC technicians, mechanical contractors' project managers and product engineers at equipment
manufacturers.
Pass 2: ("mechanical engineer" OR "mep engineer") AND hvac AND (revit OR
"load calculations") NOT (technician OR installer OR "service"): much closer, though some
profiles belong to contractors' engineers who coordinate rather than design.
Pass 3: add AND ("professional engineer" OR "pe license" OR "engineer in
training" OR eit OR "consulting engineer"). License-path terms tend to come from design-side
engineers. The list is short enough to call, and each license is checked on the state board's
lookup before submittal.
The NOT block did most of the work in pass 2. In mechanical searches, removing technicians usually matters more than adding tools.
What a search cannot verify
A string can find someone whose profile names the right CAD tool and specialty. It cannot show whether they designed the part or updated the drawing, whether a PE license is active in the client's state, or how they handle a design that fails test. The mechanical engineer phone screen questions test that ownership, how to source candidates on LinkedIn covers outreach once you have the list, and the sister guides for electrical engineers and civil engineers cover the other disciplines that share the PE process.
Questions people ask
Does a mechanical engineer need a PE license?
It depends on the work, and the client will know. Engineers who seal building or public-works drawings, such as HVAC and plumbing design, generally need a PE license from a state board; many product and manufacturing engineers never get one. Ask at intake whether the hire must stamp drawings before putting PE in the string. This is not legal advice.
Why does "PE" make a mechanical search worse?
Because the two letters also stand for physical education, private equity and polyethylene, and LinkedIn matches the word, not the meaning. Search "professional engineer" and "pe license" instead, and confirm the license on the state board's lookup.
Should I search for a specific CAD tool?
Yes, when the client uses one and has no time to retrain. SolidWorks, Creo, NX and CATIA all do similar jobs, but each takes months to become fast in. Put the client's tool in a required block and the others in an optional one if the client is flexible.
How do I keep mechanics and HVAC technicians out of the results?
Exclude "mechanic," "technician" and "installer" with NOT, and require an engineering tool such as a CAD or analysis package. Technicians often list HVAC and mechanical systems, but rarely list design software or load calculations.
