Occupational therapist searches are buried by two abbreviations. "OT" means overtime on thousands of hourly resumes and operational technology on every industrial security profile, and "OTR" is how truck drivers write over-the-road. Spell the title out and the list still mixes certified occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, rehab aides, OT students and therapists from settings with very different paperwork. A school-based OT and an acute care OT share a title and little else.
The NBCOT credential and the setting separate them. Below are ten strings by setting, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For screening once you have a list, see the occupational therapist screening questions.
Credentials and licenses that change what an OT search finds
- OTR and COTA. The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy awards two credentials. Its page on what an OTR or COTA is spells them out as Occupational Therapist, Registered and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, says the OTR evaluates, plans and supervises the COTA, and says certification is renewed every three years. Employers can check status through the "Verify an OTR/COTA" tool on nbcot.org.
- OTR/L and the state license. NBCOT also says OTRs and COTAs are state-licensed professionals, which is why many therapists write OTR/L or COTA/L. The license, not the NBCOT credential, is what lets them practice in a given state.
- Degrees. Profiles show the entry degree in several forms: MOT, MSOT, MS in occupational therapy and OTD. Older therapists may hold a bachelor's. Search the title, not the degree, unless the client requires a doctorate.
- Hand therapy. The Hand Therapy Certification Commission awards the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) credential, which both OTs and PTs hold. For hand clinics it is the strongest single term.
- The OT Compact. The Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact site says, as of its October 2026 update, that each member state opens applications at its own pace and that the process to receive privileges is still developing. Treat compact privileges as state-by-state until the compact confirms them. This is not legal advice.
Ten Boolean strings by occupational therapy setting
Swap in the setting, population and state from your own intake; these are examples.
Hospital, rehab and post-acute
1. Acute care OT — LinkedIn general search
("occupational therapist" OR "acute care occupational therapist" OR "inpatient occupational therapist") AND (icu OR "acute care" OR "discharge planning") AND ("otr/l" OR otr OR otd) NOT ("occupational therapy assistant" OR cota OR student)
2. Inpatient rehab OT — LinkedIn Recruiter, Job titles + Keywords filters
("occupational therapist" OR "rehab occupational therapist") AND ("inpatient rehabilitation" OR irf OR stroke OR "spinal cord injury" OR "brain injury") AND ("otr/l" OR otr)
3. Skilled nursing OT — Indeed Smart Sourcing
("occupational therapist" OR "staff occupational therapist") AND skill: ("skilled nursing" OR snf OR "long-term care" OR geriatrics) AND ("otr/l" OR otr) NOT ("occupational therapy assistant" OR cota)
4. Home health OT — Indeed Smart Sourcing
("home health occupational therapist" OR "occupational therapist") AND skill: ("home health" OR oasis OR "home safety evaluation") AND (evaluations OR "plan of care")
Outpatient, pediatrics and mental health
5. Hand therapy — LinkedIn general search
("occupational therapist" OR "hand therapist" OR "certified hand therapist") AND (cht OR "hand therapy" OR splinting OR orthotics) NOT ("physical therapist assistant" OR student)
6. School-based OT — LinkedIn general search
("school-based occupational therapist" OR "pediatric occupational therapist" OR "occupational therapist") AND ("school based" OR iep OR "special education") AND ("otr/l" OR otr) NOT (cota OR student)
7. Early intervention or pediatric clinic — Indeed Smart Sourcing
("pediatric occupational therapist" OR "occupational therapist") AND skill: ("early intervention" OR "sensory integration" OR "feeding therapy" OR pediatrics) AND ("otr/l" OR otr)
8. Behavioral health OT — LinkedIn general search
("occupational therapist") AND ("mental health" OR "behavioral health" OR psychiatric) AND ("group therapy" OR "inpatient psychiatry" OR "community mental health")
Assistants, new graduates and X-ray
9. COTA for a SNF or home health team — Indeed Smart Sourcing
("certified occupational therapy assistant" OR "occupational therapy assistant" OR cota OR "cota/l") AND skill: ("skilled nursing" OR "home health" OR "adl training") NOT ("physical therapist assistant" OR student)
10. Public profiles by metro — Google X-ray
site:linkedin.com/in "occupational therapist" "cht" "hand therapy" "seattle" -jobs -recruiter -student
For new graduates, swap string 9's title block for ("occupational therapist" OR "ot graduate") and add
fieldofstudy: ("occupational therapy") on Indeed, with "fieldwork" or "level ii fieldwork" as
the experience term.
What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support
Indeed's healthcare
Boolean guide shows AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills
section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026. OTs
often list settings and populations as skills, which is why strings 3, 4, 7 and 9 put them behind
skill:.
LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. That matters for this role because "occupational therapist," "occupational therapy" and "OT" all have to be written out. Put the slash form in quotes ("otr/l") so the search reads it as one term. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the filters that accept Boolean and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems.
Google's search operators page
documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. "CHT" alone
matches unrelated acronyms, so pair it with "hand therapy," as string 10 does.
Narrowing by license, setting and supervision
License state comes first. Until the compact is issuing privileges for both the therapist's home state and the client's state, assume the OT needs a license from the client's state board, and ask at intake how long the client will wait. Verify the license on the state board's lookup and the NBCOT credential on NBCOT's verification tool.
Setting decides the paperwork and the day. Acute care OTs talk about ADL evaluations and discharge recommendations; SNF OTs talk about Medicare documentation and productivity; school-based OTs talk about IEP goals and caseloads across several schools; hand therapists talk about splints and post-surgical protocols. Put the client's setting vocabulary in a required block.
Supervision is the last filter. If the client staffs COTAs, it needs an OTR who is comfortable supervising them, and some OTs prefer roles without that duty. Ask the client which it is, and add "supervision" or "supervising cota" to the string only when it matters.
False positives worth excluding with NOT
- The overtime, technology and trucking collisions. "OT" matches overtime and operational technology; "OTR" matches over-the-road drivers. Never search either alone.
- COTAs in an OTR search. Assistants share settings and vocabulary. Exclude "occupational therapy assistant" and COTA when the client needs an evaluating therapist.
- Physical therapists and PTAs. They work in the same gyms and list the same settings. For PT searches, see Boolean search strings for physical therapists.
- Speech-language pathologists. School and pediatric searches pull in SLPs who list the same IEP and early intervention terms. See the speech-language pathologist screening questions for that role.
- Students and rehab aides. "OT student" and "fieldwork student" profiles carry every setting term, and rehab aides list therapy departments. Exclude "student" and "aide."
A worked example: three passes on a hand therapy search
An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.
Intake: An orthopedic group needs an outpatient hand therapist, CHT preferred, custom splinting required, licensed in the client's state.
Pass 1: OT AND hand: a flood of hourly workers listing overtime,
"hands-on" anything, and a few therapists.
Pass 2: ("occupational therapist" OR "hand therapist") AND ("hand therapy" OR
cht) NOT (student OR cota OR aide): relevant, though some profiles mention a hand therapy rotation
from school.
Pass 3: add AND (splinting OR orthotics OR "custom orthoses" OR "post-operative
protocols"). The list is short enough to call; each license is checked on the state board's
lookup, and CHT status on HTCC's directory, before submittal.
The clinical terms did what the abbreviation could not. For OTs, the setting and the interventions narrow faster than the title ever will.
What a search cannot verify
A string can find someone whose profile names the right setting and credentials. It cannot confirm that a license is active, how the OT sets goals with a patient who does not want to do the session, or how they handle a productivity target that pushes against good care. The occupational therapist screening questions test clinical reasoning, and the interview guide for healthcare roles covers later rounds.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between OTR and COTA?
Both are NBCOT credentials. OTR stands for Occupational Therapist, Registered, and COTA for Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. NBCOT describes the OTR as the one who evaluates and plans treatment and supervises the COTA, who carries out and documents treatment. Search them separately, because the roles are not interchangeable.
Why does searching for OT or OTR return truck drivers and engineers?
OT also means overtime and operational technology, and OTR is common trucking shorthand for over-the-road. Search "occupational therapist" and "occupational therapy" in full, and use OTR/L, OTD or CHT only alongside those words.
Can an occupational therapist work in another state through the OT Compact?
Not everywhere yet. The OT Compact's site says, as of October 2026, that each member state opens applications at its own pace and that the process to receive privileges is still developing. Check otcompact.gov for the states involved, and assume a state license is needed until the compact confirms otherwise. This is not legal advice.
What does CHT mean on an occupational therapist's profile?
Certified Hand Therapist, a credential from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission. Both occupational and physical therapists can hold it. For an outpatient hand clinic it is one of the strongest single terms you can search.
