"Social worker" is a protected title in many states, but resume databases do not know that. A search for it returns licensed clinical social workers running therapy caseloads, hospital discharge planners, school social workers, child protective services investigators, case managers with nursing licenses, caseworkers with unrelated degrees, MSW students and social media managers. The license level and the setting are what separate a candidate the client can hire from one it legally cannot.
Below are ten strings by social work setting, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For what to ask once you have a list, see the social worker screening questions.
Degrees, exams and licenses that change what a social work search finds
| Level | What candidates write | Typical roles |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's | BSW, LBSW, LSW (varies by state) | Case management, child welfare, social services |
| Master's | MSW, LMSW, LSW; LCSW in Massachusetts and Maryland | Medical social work, school social work, supervised clinical work |
| Clinical | LCSW in most states, LICSW, LCSW-C in Maryland, LISW in Ohio | Therapy, independent practice, clinical supervision |
- ASWB exams. The Association of Social Work Boards offers its licensing exams in five categories: Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical. It tells candidates to apply for licensure with their state or provincial board first, as of October 2026.
- License titles vary by state. LCSW usually means the clinical license, but not everywhere. Massachusetts licenses social workers at four levels, and its board FAQ says an LICSW is required to practice independently, while an LCSW provides clinical services only as an employee under LICSW supervision. Maryland's Board of Social Work Examiners uses LCSW-C for its clinical license. Search the client state's titles and check its board. This is not legal advice.
- The Social Work Licensure Compact. The compact's site says it has reached activation but multistate licenses are not yet being issued, as of October 2026. For now, a social worker needs a license in each state where they practice.
- MSW versus a related degree. Many caseworkers hold psychology, sociology or human services degrees. They can be strong for unlicensed roles; they cannot sit for most social work licenses without a social work degree.

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support
Indeed's healthcare
Boolean guide documents AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the
skills section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October
2026. String 9 uses fieldofstudy: to separate MSW graduates from people with related degrees.
LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. Social workers write their license several ways ("LCSW," "L.C.S.W.," "licensed clinical social worker"), so put the spelled-out form next to the abbreviation. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the Boolean filters and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems.
Google's search operators page
documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Many
therapists also list themselves in therapist directories rather than on LinkedIn; if you X-ray a
directory, respect its terms of use and contact candidates through the channels it offers.
Narrowing by license, state and population
License level is the first decision, and the client should make it. A hospital may require an LCSW for some roles and accept an LMSW for others; a community agency may bill for therapy only when an independently licensed clinician provides it. Ask which license the role requires and whether a candidate working toward it, under supervision, is acceptable.
State comes next. Without a working multistate license, a social worker needs a license in the client's state, and telehealth roles usually require a license where the client's patients are. Add the state to the string, and confirm each license on the board's lookup.
Population narrows the rest: older adults, children and families, veterans, people in crisis, people with serious mental illness. Words such as "geriatric," "pediatric," "crisis" or "assertive community treatment" are better narrowing terms than more license abbreviations.
False positives worth excluding with NOT
- Social media. "Social media manager" and "social marketing" profiles match "social." Exclude "social media" when the string is loose.
- Students and interns. "MSW student," "MSW candidate" and "social work intern" profiles carry every term. Keep them only for new-graduate hiring.
- Nurse case managers. RN case managers share discharge planning and care coordination vocabulary. Exclude "RN" and "registered nurse" when the role needs a social worker.
- Counselors and psychologists, when the license must be social work. Licensed professional counselors and marriage and family therapists list the same therapy models. Some clients accept them; ask. For counselor searches, see the mental health counselor screening questions.
- Social services assistants. "Case aide" and "social services assistant" profiles fit support roles, not licensed ones.
A worked example: three passes on a medical social worker search
An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.
Intake: A hospital needs a social worker for its emergency department and inpatient units, LMSW minimum and LCSW preferred, with discharge planning and crisis assessment experience.
Pass 1: "social worker" AND hospital: a long list including RN case
managers, outpatient therapists, child welfare workers who mention hospitals, and MSW students.
Pass 2: ("medical social worker" OR "hospital social worker" OR "social
worker") AND ("discharge planning" OR "psychosocial assessment") AND (lmsw OR lcsw OR msw) NOT (student OR
rn): relevant, though many profiles are inpatient rehab or skilled nursing.
Pass 3: add AND ("emergency department" OR "crisis assessment" OR "trauma
center" OR "acute care"). Those terms tend to come from social workers who work fast-moving
hospital units. The list is short enough to call, and each license is checked on the state board's
lookup before submittal.
The setting block did the narrowing. For social workers, the license sets the floor and the setting decides the fit.
What a search cannot verify
A string can find someone whose profile names the right license and setting. It cannot confirm that a license is active, how a social worker handles a family that disagrees with a discharge plan, or how they document a risk assessment. The social worker screening questions test judgment, the interview guide for social workers covers later rounds, and the 30-60-90 day plan for social workers helps set expectations with the client.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between an LMSW and an LCSW?
In most states, an LMSW or similar master's-level license allows social work practice, often under supervision, while an LCSW is the clinical license that allows independent clinical practice after supervised experience and the ASWB Clinical exam. Titles vary by state; Massachusetts, for example, uses LICSW for the independent clinical license and LCSW for a master's-level one, and Maryland uses LCSW-C for its clinical license. Check the board in the client's state. This is not legal advice.
Who issues social work licenses?
State and provincial boards. The Association of Social Work Boards runs the licensing exams in five categories, Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical, and tells candidates to apply for licensure with their board first. Verify the license on the board's own lookup.
Can a social worker use a multistate license yet?
Not as of October 2026. The Social Work Licensure Compact's site says the compact has reached activation, but multistate licenses are not yet being issued, so a social worker still needs a license in each state where they practice. Check the compact's site for updates.
How do I keep caseworkers without an MSW out of a clinical search?
Require the degree or license, such as MSW, LCSW or LICSW, and exclude "case aide," "caseworker assistant" and "social services assistant" with NOT. Many caseworkers do excellent work without a social work degree, so keep them when the client's role does not require licensure.
