DevOps engineer job description template: which DevOps, the real stack and on-call terms
On this page
"DevOps engineer" can mean the person who owns the build and release pipeline, the person who runs the Kubernetes platform, the on-call responder for production, or the one engineer who keeps a small company's cloud account from falling over. A DevOps engineer job description that lists every tool in the ecosystem and says none of this attracts a stack of resumes with the same 30 keywords. Below is a copy-ready template, the on-call and overtime lines with sources, how each must-have becomes a screening question and scorecard row, and the mistakes that cost you senior candidates. The general method is in how to write a job description that screens.
Name the flavor of DevOps
| Flavor | What fills the week | Must-have that separates it |
|---|---|---|
| Build and release | CI/CD pipelines, build speed, deployment safety, developer tooling | Has owned a pipeline many engineers deploy through |
| Platform or infrastructure | Infrastructure as code, container platform, networking, environments | Has built and maintained infrastructure others run services on |
| Reliability and operations | Monitoring, alerting, incidents, capacity and cost | Has led incident response and fixed the cause afterward |
| Solo or first DevOps hire | All of the above for a small team, plus security basics | Has been the main owner of a production environment end to end |
Then write down the scale in plain terms with the hiring manager: how many services, engineers and environments, and rough traffic or deploy frequency. "About 40 services, 60 engineers, deploys several times a day" is an example of the level of detail that lets a candidate judge the job. Also say whether the team is building new infrastructure, migrating, or maintaining what exists; those attract different temperaments.

included in salary].
- [Access to production data requires [background check as
permitted by law / security training].]
HOW WE HIRE
[Recruiter screen; hiring manager conversation; a systems design
discussion about infrastructure you have built; a practical
troubleshooting session; meeting the team.]

On-call, overtime and pay lines
Not legal advice. The wage and hour points below were checked against U.S. Department of Labor sources and federal regulations as of October 2026. State law can be stricter; confirm the classification with counsel.
Exempt status. Most DevOps engineers are classified as exempt, usually under the computer employee exemption. The Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #17E says it applies to employees paid on a salary basis at the standard level or hourly at not less than $27.63, whose primary duty is systems analysis, design or development of computer systems or programs, or similar skilled work. It excludes employees engaged in the manufacture or repair of computer hardware. A role that is mainly racking servers or replacing parts may not qualify, so get the duties reviewed.
On-call time. For nonexempt staff, such as an hourly operations technician sharing the rotation, federal rules treat on-call time differently depending on the restriction. An employee required to remain on call on the premises, or so close that they cannot use the time for their own purposes, is working; one who only has to be reachable is generally not (29 CFR 785.17). Whatever the classification, stating the rotation and how it is compensated in the posting answers the question candidates will ask first.
Pay. Post the approved range; remote infrastructure roles are often open in many states at once, so check pay transparency laws by state. The BLS has no occupation called DevOps engineer. The closest Occupational Outlook Handbook entries are software developers and network and computer systems administrators, neither a close match; this page does not quote figures.
EEO. Close with your standard EEO statement covering the characteristics the EEOC lists and an accommodation contact.
From must-haves to screening questions and scorecard rows
A recruiter can screen DevOps candidates without deep technical knowledge by asking for specific systems and incidents. Engineers who did the work describe trade-offs and failures; keyword lists do not survive a follow-up.
| Must-have | Screening question | Scorecard competency | Evidence of a strong answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production infrastructure as code | "Describe infrastructure you built with code that is still running. What would you do differently?" | Infrastructure design | Names components, how changes are reviewed and applied, and a real regret |
| Owned a pipeline | "How many engineers deploy through the pipeline you own, and what did you change to make it faster or safer?" | Delivery engineering | A number, a specific change and its measured effect |
| Incident response | "Tell me about the worst incident you handled. What was the cause, and what changed afterward?" | Operations judgment | Calm sequence, communication during the incident and a lasting fix |
| Automation | "What manual task did you automate most recently, and how much time did it save?" | Automation | A concrete script or tool, the language and who uses it now |
| On-call fit | "Here is our rotation and recent page volume. How does that compare with your last role?" | Not scored | Informed yes, or a mismatch surfaced early |
The longer list, including follow-ups that expose tool-name dropping, is in DevOps engineer screening questions. For roles closer to provider-specific architecture use cloud engineer screening questions, and for server-heavy operations roles, systems administrator screening questions. The technical rounds follow the interview guide for software engineers, adapted for infrastructure.
Common mistakes in DevOps engineer job descriptions
The ecosystem as a must-have list
Three clouds, four orchestration tools, five monitoring products and every configuration language is not a job. List what you actually run as the environment, and require the skills: infrastructure as code, pipelines, incident response, automation.
Hiding the on-call
Candidates who learn about a noisy 24x7 rotation in the final round withdraw. Put the rotation, response time and recent load in the posting.
A team's job for one person
"Own security, compliance, networking, databases, cost, developer experience and support" for a single DevOps hire is a sign of an understaffed function. If it is true, say it is a first hire and name the top two priorities.
Degree requirements
Many strong infrastructure engineers came up through systems administration or support. Ask for the work they have done, not a computer science degree.
Treating certifications as proof
Certifications show study. Production experience shows up in the incident and pipeline questions. Keep certifications in the nice-to-haves.
Before you publish
- The flavor of DevOps, scale and whether the work is build, migrate or maintain are in the summary.
- Tools are named as the environment; must-haves describe work done.
- On-call rotation, response time, load and compensation are stated.
- Classification has been reviewed against the duties.
- An approved pay range, the EEO statement and an accommodation contact close the posting.
Questions people ask
Should a DevOps job description require cloud certifications?
Treat them as a nice-to-have. A certification shows someone studied a provider's services, but the posting should screen for work they have done: infrastructure they built and maintained, pipelines they own, incidents they handled. Requiring a specific certification excludes experienced engineers who learned on the job.
What should a DevOps posting say about on-call?
State whether there is a rotation, how often each engineer is on call, the expected response time, how many pages a typical week brings, and how on-call is compensated or recognized. On-call is one of the first questions experienced candidates ask, and leaving it out leads to late-stage withdrawals.
Are DevOps engineers exempt from overtime?
Often, but not automatically. The federal computer employee exemption covers employees whose primary duty is systems analysis, programming or similar work and who are paid at least the salary level or $27.63 an hour. Roles centered on hardware repair are excluded, and state rules can be stricter, so have the duties reviewed before posting.
Is DevOps engineer the same as site reliability engineer?
The titles overlap. Site reliability engineering usually emphasizes service reliability targets, incident response and reducing repetitive operations work, while DevOps postings often center on build and release pipelines and infrastructure as code. Use the title your market recognizes and describe the actual work in the summary.
