"IT support specialist: troubleshoot hardware and software issues, provide excellent customer service" describes a service desk agent answering 40 calls a day, a deskside technician imaging laptops in a hospital, and a managed service provider technician juggling twelve small clients. They share a title and little else. Candidates decide whether to apply based on the tier, the users and systems they will support, the ticket volume, the on-call and after-hours expectations and whether they will drive between sites. A useful IT support specialist job description names those, lists the systems by name, and is clear about overtime and certifications. Below are the seat types, a copy-ready template, the certification and classification lines with sources, screening and scorecard rows, and the mistakes that bring in the wrong applicants. For the call itself, use help desk technician screening questions.

Name the tier and the environment

SeatWhat the day looks likeMust-have that separates it
Service desk, tier 1Phone, chat and portal tickets; password resets, access requests, triage and routingClear, patient communication; accurate ticket notes; follows a knowledge base
Desktop or deskside support, tier 2Escalations, laptop imaging and setup, peripherals, printers, onboarding and offboardingHas used the device management and directory tools the team uses; escalates with good notes
Field or multi-site supportDriving between offices or clinics, installs, moves, on-site fixesPlans a route; works alone; driver's license and the vehicle arrangement stated
MSP technicianMany small clients, remote tools, time tracking, varied environmentsSwitches context fast; documents per client; comfortable with billable time
VIP or executive supportWhite-glove support for leaders, meeting rooms, travel setups, mobile devicesJudgment and discretion with senior staff; calm under time pressure

Then settle the numbers: users and devices supported, average tickets per day, the channels (phone, chat, walk-up), hours and shift pattern, the on-call rotation, and the main systems (operating systems, directory, device management, ticketing). BLS describes two groups, computer user support specialists, also called help-desk technicians, and computer network support specialists, and says education requirements vary from IT certifications with a high school diploma to a degree for more technical roles (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified August 27, 2026). If the role is mostly network work, start from the network engineer job description template.

Certifications, classification and pay

Not legal advice. The overtime points below were checked against the Department of Labor as of October 2026, and certification details against the issuers. State overtime rules can be stricter; confirm classification with counsel.

Certifications. CompTIA A+ requires passing two exams, Core 1 (hardware and networking) and Core 2 (operating systems and security) (CompTIA A+). ITIL 4 Foundation is issued by PeopleCert. Both are good nice-to-haves for service desk work; requiring them shuts out technicians who learned on the job.

Exempt or nonexempt. The computer employee exemption requires a primary duty of systems analysis, design, development, testing or modification of systems or programs, or similar skilled computer work, paid on a salary or fee basis at no less than the standard level ($684 a week, as the Department of Labor lists it) or at least $27.63 an hour. The Department of Labor says it does not include employees engaged in the manufacture or repair of computer hardware, and that employees whose work is highly dependent on computers and software are not exempt under it unless their primary duty is that kind of skilled work (DOL Fact Sheet 17E). Most service desk and desktop support roles are therefore overtime-eligible. Say so in the posting, and track after-hours and on-call time.

Pay and EEO. Post the range and on-call pay. Check pay transparency laws by state. BLS publishes pay data for computer support specialists in the Handbook profile above; this page does not quote figures. If the role has privileged access, name the background check and follow the FCRA background check process. Close with a short EEO statement and an accommodation contact.

From must-haves to screening questions and scorecard rows

Must-haveScreening questionScorecard competencyEvidence of a strong answer
Troubleshooting"A user says the internet is down. Walk me through your first five minutes."Structured troubleshootingScopes the problem (one user or many), checks the simple layers first, escalates with evidence
Access and security"Someone calls asking for a password reset for their manager's account. What do you do?"Security judgmentVerifies identity per policy, refuses to bypass it, logs the request
Ticket hygiene"Read me a ticket note you would be proud of. What makes it good?"DocumentationSymptoms, steps tried, result and next step, written for the next technician
User communication"Tell me about a frustrated user. What did you say, and how did it end?"Customer servicePlain language, sets expectations, closes the loop
Core systems"Which device management and directory tools have you used, and what did you do in them?"Tool fluencyNames tasks (enrolled devices, reset MFA, built a group), not just logos

The later rounds are in the interview guide for IT support roles, and the first three months are in the 30-60-90 day plan for IT support specialists.

Common mistakes in IT support job descriptions

A list of every technology the company owns

Twenty logos say nothing about the job. List the core systems the technician will touch daily and leave the rest out.

No tier or ticket volume

Tier 2 candidates skip postings that look like call center work, and tier 1 candidates skip ones that look like systems administration. Name the tier and the volume.

Calling it exempt by default

A salary alone does not make help desk work exempt. Decide classification on the duties and say so in the posting.

Hiding on-call and after-hours work

Weekend patching windows and on-call phones are part of many roles. State the rotation and the pay.

Certification walls

Requiring three certifications for a tier 1 role filters out good communicators who could earn them on the job.

Before you publish

  • Tier, users, devices, ticket volume and channels are in the summary.
  • Core systems are named; certifications are preferred unless a contract requires them.
  • Hours, on-call and travel are stated with how they are paid.
  • Classification has been reviewed against the duties.
  • The pay range, required checks, EEO statement and accommodation contact close the posting.

Questions people ask

Is an IT support specialist exempt from overtime?

Usually not. The computer employee exemption requires a primary duty of systems analysis, design, programming or similar skilled work, plus a salary of at least the standard level or at least $27.63 an hour. The Department of Labor says it does not cover employees who manufacture or repair computer hardware, or employees whose work is highly dependent on computers without being that kind of skilled computer work. Most help desk and desktop support roles are overtime-eligible.

Should an IT support posting require CompTIA A+?

Make it preferred for most roles. A+ is a common entry certification and requires two exams, Core 1 and Core 2, but many good technicians learned on the job. If you need it for a contract or a client requirement, say so, and consider 'or within 90 days of hire' with paid exam fees.

What is the difference between tier 1 and tier 2 support?

Tier 1 takes first contact: logging tickets, password resets, account and access requests, basic troubleshooting and routing. Tier 2 takes escalations: deeper desktop, application and network problems, imaging and device management, and fixes that need admin rights. Name the tier and give examples of tickets the role closes alone.

How do we screen for customer service in an IT support hire?

Ask about a specific frustrated user and what the candidate said, then listen for whether they explained the fix in plain language and closed the loop. A role-play of a five-minute ticket call also works, scored on the same rubric for every candidate.
