"Medical technologist, all shifts, ASCP required." Lab professionals read past that because it leaves out what decides the job: which bench or benches, whether the night shift works alone across the whole core lab, the analyzers and LIS, and whether the state requires a license on top of certification. A generalist rotating through chemistry, hematology, blood bank and microbiology at a community hospital has a different job from a molecular scientist at a reference lab or a blood bank specialist at a trauma center. A useful medical lab scientist job description names the setting and benches, the test complexity and volume, the shift and coverage model, the certification and any state license in exact terms, and the competency program. Below are the seat types, the federal and state lines with sources, a copy-ready template, screening and scorecard rows, and common mistakes. For the phone screen, use the medical lab scientist screening questions.

Not legal advice. The credential and licensing points below were checked against the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, the ASCP Board of Certification, 42 CFR 493.1489 (CLIA), the California Department of Public Health and the New York State Education Department as of October 2026. Your laboratory director is responsible for personnel qualifications; confirm details with them and the state.

Name the bench and the coverage model

SeatWhat the shift looks likeMust-have that separates it
Hospital generalistRotation through chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank and sometimes microbiologyCompetence across all core benches; troubleshooting analyzers without a specialist nearby
Night shift, small hospitalOne or two scientists covering the whole lab, STATs from the ED, crossmatches, critical valuesIndependent judgment; blood bank workups alone; calling critical values
Blood bank or transfusion serviceAntibody identification, crossmatching, massive transfusion support, product inventoryAntibody workups; massive transfusion protocol experience
MicrobiologyCulture workups, identification and susceptibility, molecular panels, infection control reportingPlate reading and organism identification; automated ID systems
Reference or commercial labHigh-volume automated lines, a single department, production targetsPace on automation; quality control discipline at volume
Molecular or specialty labPCR, sequencing or other specialty testing, validations, documentationMolecular methods; validation and documentation experience

Then settle with the lab manager: the benches the person will cover in the first six months, the shift and weekend rotation, staffing per shift, test volume (as an estimate), analyzer platforms and LIS, and whether the role includes phlebotomy or specimen processing. If it does, coordinate with the phlebotomist job description template so the two roles do not overlap by accident.

Federal, certification and state license lines

Education. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for clinical laboratory technologists and technicians (last modified August 27, 2026) says technologists typically need a bachelor's degree, technicians sometimes qualify with an associate's degree, some states require laboratory personnel to be licensed or registered, and certification as a medical laboratory scientist or technician is available.

CLIA. For high complexity testing, federal rules require each person performing the testing to hold a current license issued by the state if the state requires one, and to meet one of several education routes, such as a bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, among others (42 CFR 493.1489). The laboratory director applies these rules to the test menu; the posting should match what the director will accept.

ASCP certification. The ASCP Board of Certification's MLS credential has several routes; Route 1 is a bachelor's degree plus completion of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program, acceptable for five years after completion. Credentials issued to technologists since January 1, 2004 are time-limited and maintained through ASCP's Credential Maintenance Program on a three-year cycle. If you also accept AMT or other certifications, list them.

California. The California Department of Public Health issues a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (generalist) license. It requires specified chemistry, biology and physics or math coursework, at least one year of post-baccalaureate clinical training or one year of qualifying work experience covering the main areas of the lab, an approved exam (ASCP's MLS exam is approved) and an online quiz on California laboratory law. CDPH also issues trainee licenses and specialty scientist licenses. Write "active California CLS license" rather than "licensed."

New York. The New York State Education Department licenses clinical laboratory technologists, with education routes that include a NAACLS-accredited program, an ASCP Board of Certification exam, and restricted licenses for areas such as cytogenetics and molecular testing. Out-of-state scientists may qualify for a provisional permit while the license is processed; say whether you will wait.

Pay and EEO

Post the hourly range and differentials; night generalists in small hospitals often compare the night differential first. The BLS profile linked above publishes pay data; this page does not quote figures. Close with a short EEO statement covering the characteristics the EEOC lists, and an accommodation contact.

From must-haves to screening questions and scorecard rows

Must-haveScreening questionScorecard competencyEvidence of a strong answer
Certification and license"Which certifications and state lab licenses do you hold, and when do they renew?"Not scored: verified with ASCP and the stateExact credentials, license numbers and dates
Quality control"Your chemistry QC fails a Westgard rule on one level at 2 a.m. What do you do with patient samples?"QC judgmentHolds results, investigates, recalibrates or reruns, documents, looks back at results since the last good QC
Blood bank (if relevant)"You get a positive antibody screen on a patient needing two units urgently. Walk me through it."Transfusion safetyStarts the workup, communicates with the physician, follows emergency release policy if needed
Critical values"You call a critical potassium and the nurse says the patient looks fine. What now?"Communication and safetyReports it anyway, asks about hemolysis or draw site, documents the read-back

Common mistakes in medical lab scientist job descriptions

"ASCP required" in a licensure state

In California or New York, certification alone is not enough to perform testing; the state license is the gate. Name it.

No bench or coverage model

A specialist who has worked only in microbiology may not be ready to cover blood bank alone at night. Say which benches and how many people per shift.

MLS and MLT blurred

If you hire both, write separate must-haves and say which tests each may perform under your director's policy.

Leaving out the analyzers

Platform experience shortens orientation. List the main ones so candidates can say where they match.

Before you publish

  • Setting, benches, coverage model and volume are in the summary.
  • Education matches CLIA rules and the director's policy.
  • Certification and any state license lines use exact terms.
  • Shift pattern and differentials are stated.
  • EEO statement and accommodation contact close the posting.

Questions people ask

Does a medical lab scientist need a state license?

Only in states that license laboratory personnel. BLS says some states require laboratory personnel to be licensed or registered, with requirements that vary by state and specialty. California and New York are two examples: California's Department of Public Health issues a Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, and New York's State Education Department licenses clinical laboratory technologists. Federal CLIA rules then require testing personnel to hold any license the state requires.

What does MLS(ASCP) require?

One common route to the ASCP Board of Certification's Medical Laboratory Scientist credential is a bachelor's degree plus completion of a NAACLS-accredited MLS program within the last five years. Other routes exist, including one for MLT(ASCP) holders with specified coursework and clinical experience. Credentials earned since 2004 must be maintained through ASCP's Credential Maintenance Program on a three-year cycle.

What are the CLIA education rules for high complexity testing?

Under 42 CFR 493.1489, people performing high complexity testing must hold a current state license where one is required and meet one of several education routes, such as a bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology. Your laboratory director decides how the rule applies to each test menu.

Should the posting say MLS or MLT?

Say which one you are hiring, or both with separate must-haves. MLTs typically enter with an associate degree, and what they may do depends on test complexity, state law and your director's policy. A posting that says 'MLS/MLT' without explaining the difference draws applicants who cannot be assigned the work you need.
