Structured interview software makes sure every candidate for a role gets the same job-related questions and is scored on the same predefined scale. As of October 2026, most teams get it from their ATS (Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever, Workable and Teamtailor all include interview kits and scorecards), add live guidance during the call with tools such as BrightHire, Employ's AI Interview Companion or Interview Signal, and use one-way video tools such as Hireflix or Spark Hire for identical first-round questions. The right mix depends on which part of structure your team actually skips.
We make Interview Signal, one of the tools below; everything about the other products comes from their own sites, linked and dated. If you do not have an ATS, our guide to running structured interviews without one shows the spreadsheet version.
What does structured interview software need to do?
Structure breaks down at three points, and tools tend to cover one or two of them:
- Plan: a guide per role and stage, with questions tied to the competencies the job needs and a rating scale with anchors. See our interview guide template.
- Run: during the call, interviewers drift into chat, skip the hard question or ask a different one. Live guidance and coverage tracking address this.
- Score: each interviewer rates independently, against the anchors, before hearing anyone else's view. We compare scoring tools in interview scorecard software.
Most ATSs are strong on planning and scoring and weak on the run stage, because they are not in the room. That is the gap live interview tools fill.
What should a structured interview kit contain?
Whatever tool you use, check that it can hold all of these, per role and per stage:
- Three to five competencies the stage is meant to assess, taken from the job, not from a generic list.
- Two or three questions per competency, with the follow-up probes interviewers are allowed to use. A shared question bank stops every team writing its own.
- A rating scale with written anchors describing what a 1, 2, 3 and 4 answer sounds like; see behavioral anchors for interview scores.
- Must-ask questions marked, such as work authorization or a required certification, so they are never skipped.
- Instructions for the interviewer: timing, what not to ask, and when to submit the scorecard.
If a tool cannot hold anchors or must-ask markers, interviewers will keep them in their heads, and that is where structure quietly disappears.

Which ATS is best for structured interviews?
Greenhouse
Greenhouse builds structure into job setup. Interview kits show sample questions and the focus attributes for that interview, highlighted at the top (interview kits), and an AI feature suggests roughly one question per five minutes of interview time from the job title, description and attributes, on its Core, Plus and Pro tiers (question suggestions). Pricing is customized. Best for: organizations that want every hiring team to follow the same method, with reports to check it.
Ashby
Ashby includes per-stage interview plans with interviewer instructions and feedback forms on every plan. Its Foundations plan, for companies up to 100 employees, shows $400 a month for the 11–25 employee band, with 10% off annual commitments (Ashby pricing). Best for: fast-growing companies that want structure and recruiting analytics in one system.
Lever
Lever's interview plans set default interviewers, durations and feedback forms per stage (Lever help), and its AI interview guide tool generates questions from a pasted job description (Lever). Prices are quoted. Best for: teams already on Lever that want to tighten their process without a new tool.
Workable and Teamtailor
Workable builds interview kits from skills and evaluation questions, can create them automatically from the job requirements, and includes them on all plans (Workable help); Standard is $299 a month for companies with 1–20 employees. Teamtailor's interview kits combine instructions, questions and a scorecard, and its AI can suggest structured questions (Teamtailor). Best for: smaller in-house teams that want structure without configuration work.
Which tools keep interviewers on the plan during the call?
A kit in the ATS does not help if the interviewer never opens it. Live tools sit beside the call:
- BrightHire offers "real-time guides, prompting your interviewers with the right questions," and lists interview topic coverage on its Teams tier (BrightHire). Best for: large teams on Zoom.
- Employ AI Interview Companion, formerly Pillar, generates interview questions from a pasted job description and promises to "guide interviewers, live in the interview." Employ states it does not provide candidate scoring or hiring recommendations (Employ). Best for: enterprise teams on Greenhouse, Lever, Workday or iCIMS.
- HireLogic generates interview questions for any position and saves them as guide templates; its companion app can capture ratings per question (HireLogic). Best for: teams that also interview in person.
- Interview Signal builds a question guide from the job description, pins must-ask questions until they are asked, suggests follow-ups with a reason (probe, clarify, evidence) and fills the scorecard as the interview goes. On panels, questions are split across interviewers and only which questions were asked and the scores are shared. Best for: recruiters and hiring managers who run the interview themselves. Weak spots: no ATS integration, desktop only, no video recording.
When does one-way video make sense for structure?
One-way video is the most structured format there is: every candidate gets the same questions, in the same order, with the same time limits. Hireflix lets you set thinking and answering times and retakes per question, has reviewers rate responses from 1 to 5 stars, and says it does no AI scoring; Small is $75 a month billed yearly (Hireflix). Spark Hire's video interviews start at $249 a month billed annually and include configurable scorecards (Spark Hire). Best for: high-volume first rounds. Weak spot: no follow-up questions, which is where much of the evidence in a live interview comes from.
How to choose structured interview software
- Find where structure breaks. Read ten recent scorecards. Missing ratings point to a scoring problem; ratings without evidence point to a run problem.
- Start with what your ATS already does. Turn on kits, required scorecards and hidden feedback before buying anything.
- Add live guidance only if interviewers drift. Test it on real interviews with your least structured interviewers, not your best ones.
- Check AI-generated questions. Remove anything not tied to the job; our guide to reducing bias explains why.
- Train interviewers. Software does not replace a short session on probing and anchors; use our interviewer training checklist.
Questions people ask
What is structured interview software?
Structured interview software helps every candidate for a role get the same job-related questions and be rated on the same predefined scale. It usually covers three things: building interview kits or guides, keeping interviewers on the plan during the call, and collecting independent scores afterwards.
Which ATS has the best structured interviewing features?
As of October 2026, Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever, Workable and Teamtailor all include interview kits or plans and scorecards. Greenhouse is known for focus attributes and calibration reports, Ashby for per-stage plans and analytics, and Workable for publishing its price and generating kits automatically from job requirements on all plans.
Can AI generate structured interview questions from a job description?
Yes. As of October 2026, Greenhouse suggests interview questions from the job title, description and attributes, Lever and Employ's AI Interview Companion generate a guide from a pasted job description, Workable has an AI question generator, and Interview Signal builds a question guide from the job description. Review every generated question for job relevance before use.
Do I need software to run structured interviews?
No. A shared folder, a written guide per role, a scorecard with an anchored rating scale and a rule that interviewers score before they discuss will get you most of the benefit. Software helps once several hiring teams run interviews and you need the structure enforced and reported on.
