"Machinist" covers a wide range of skill. The same title is used by someone who loads bar stock into a lathe and presses cycle start, someone who sets up a five-axis mill from a print and writes the program at the control, and a toolmaker who grinds a part to a few tenths. Resume databases also return machine operators, Navy Machinist's Mates, CNC programmers who never touch a machine, and machine tool salespeople. Setup words, controls and part types do more to sort them than the title.

Below are ten strings by type of machining work, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For what to ask once you have a list, see the CNC machinist screening questions.

Skill levels, controls and credentials that change what a machinist search finds

LevelTerms candidates writeCommon titles
Operatorload and unload, run parts, deburr, calipers, in-process checksCNC operator, machine operator
Setup machinistsetup, tool offsets, work offsets, first article, edit programs at the controlCNC machinist, setup machinist
Programmer or leadMastercam, Esprit, Fusion 360, G-code, fixtures, cycle timeCNC programmer, lead machinist
Manual and tool roomBridgeport, engine lathe, surface grinder, jig bore, tolerances in tenthsManual machinist, toolmaker, tool and die maker
  • NIMS credentials. The National Institute for Metalworking Skills says its credentials are tied to job roles and most include an exam and a performance evaluation. Its published credential list includes Machining Level I credentials such as CNC Mill Operations, CNC Lathe Operations, and CNC Milling Programming Setup & Operations, plus Level II credentials. Candidates write "NIMS certified" or name the credential.
  • GD&T. Prints for precision work follow ASME's Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing standard. Search "gd&t" alongside "geometric dimensioning," because symbols are unreliable search terms.
  • Apprenticeships. Registered apprenticeship completers often write "journeyman machinist" or "journeyworker." Those words are good optional terms for a senior role.

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support

Indeed's Boolean guide documents AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026. Machinists list their machines and measuring tools in skills sections often, which is why the production strings put setup and inspection words behind skill:.

LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. Machinists write "5-axis," "5 axis," "five axis" and "5ax" for the same capability, and "G-code" with and without the hyphen, so write the variants out. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the Boolean filters and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems.

Google's search operators page documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Punctuation in terms such as "gd&t" may be ignored, so check the results rather than assuming the ampersand matched.

Narrowing by part, material and tolerance

Part family is a strong filter. A machinist who runs aluminum brackets in volume, one who makes one-off titanium aerospace parts, and one who turns medical bone screws on a Swiss lathe all write "CNC machinist." Ask the client for its industry, typical materials and the tightest tolerance a new hire will hold, and add one of those as a required block. Industry words such as "AS9100" for aerospace or "ISO 13485" for medical devices are useful optional terms because they appear on profiles of people who worked in those quality systems.

Ownership words help with level. "Set up," "programmed," "proved out" and "reduced cycle time" tend to come from setup machinists and leads; "loaded," "ran" and "monitored" tend to come from operators. Use them to rank a list rather than to filter, because thin profiles leave them out.

Shift is not searchable. Many shops run second and third shift with a premium, so raise it on the first call.

False positives worth excluding with NOT

  • Navy Machinist's Mates. The Navy's Machinist's Mate rating works on ship propulsion and auxiliary machinery, not production machining. Exclude it unless the client hires for plant maintenance.
  • Machine operators, for setup roles. Operators share the vocabulary. For operator openings, see the machine operator screening questions; for setup roles, require setup and offset terms.
  • Machine tool sales and applications. Distributor "applications engineers" and sales reps list every control and brand. Exclude "sales," "distributor" and "territory."
  • Maintenance mechanics. "Maintenance machinist" can mean a real machinist who makes repair parts or a mechanic. Keep it for plant roles; exclude "mechanic" for production machining.
  • Engineers. Manufacturing engineers mention CNC and CAM constantly. For engineering roles, see Boolean search strings for mechanical engineers.

An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.

Intake: An aerospace job shop needs a setup machinist for two five-axis mills with Fanuc-style controls, first article inspection, and the ability to edit Mastercam-posted programs at the machine.

Pass 1: machinist AND cnc: a very long list of operators, three-axis production machinists, programmers and Navy Machinist's Mates.

Pass 2: ("cnc machinist" OR "setup machinist") AND ("5-axis" OR "5 axis" OR "five axis") AND (setup OR "first article") NOT ("machinist's mate" OR sales): much closer, though some candidates ran five-axis machines that someone else set up.

Pass 3: add AND (aerospace OR as9100 OR titanium OR inconel). Those terms tend to come from machinists who held aerospace tolerances. The list is short enough to call, and each candidate is asked to walk through their last five-axis setup from print to first part.

The setup block and the industry block did the work. For machinists, what they set up and what they cut tells you more than the title.

What a search cannot verify

A string can find someone whose profile names the right machine, control and industry. It cannot show whether they actually set the job up, how they respond when the first part is out of tolerance, or how they read a complex print. The CNC machinist screening questions test setup reasoning, and the interview guide for manufacturing roles covers later rounds, including shop tours and practical tests. For welding roles at the same shop, see Boolean search strings for welders.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a CNC operator and a CNC machinist?

In most shops an operator loads parts, runs proven programs and checks dimensions, while a machinist also sets up the machine, touches off tools, edits programs and solves problems when parts go out of tolerance. Titles are used loosely, so search for setup words such as "setup," "offsets" and "first article" rather than trusting the title.

Is NIMS certification worth searching for?

As an optional term, yes. The National Institute for Metalworking Skills issues credentials such as CNC Mill Operations and CNC Lathe Operations that combine a theory test with a performance test. Many experienced machinists hold none, so do not require it unless the client asks.

Should I search by machine brand?

When the client's machines are a specific brand, include the control as an optional block. Fanuc, Haas, Mazak and Okuma controls differ enough that a machinist fluent in the client's control ramps faster, but strong machinists adapt, so do not make the brand a hard requirement unless the client insists.

Why does a machinist search return Navy profiles?

Because Machinist's Mate is a U.S. Navy enlisted rating that works on ship engineering systems, not in a machine shop. Exclude "machinist's mate" and "machinist mate" unless the client values that background for maintenance work.
