Nurse practitioner searches fail in two predictable ways. Search "nurse practitioner" and you get registered nurses who mention working alongside NPs, NP students, faculty and recruiters. Search "NP" and you get nonprofit directors and software engineers. And even a clean list mixes a family NP in urgent care, a psychiatric NP doing telehealth medication management and an acute care NP on a cardiac surgery team, whose training and board certifications are not interchangeable.

The population focus and the board credential sort them. Below are ten strings by NP specialty and setting, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For screening once you have a list, see the nurse practitioner screening questions.

  • ANCC. The American Nurses Credentialing Center's certification list includes FNP-BC, AGPCNP-BC, AGACNP-BC and PMHNP-BC as of October 2026. Its FNP page says the credential is valid for five years.
  • AANPCB, now NPCB. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board, which now operates as NPCB, lists FNP, AGNP, PMHNP and ENP programs. Its FAQ describes a five-year certification period and says employers request primary source verification through its Verify tab. Profiles may name either AANPCB or NPCB.
  • The license is state by state. NPs are licensed as advanced practice registered nurses by each state's board of nursing. AANP's state practice environment page groups states into full, reduced and restricted practice; in reduced and restricted states, NPs need a collaborative agreement or supervision. This is not legal advice.
  • Prescribing identifiers. Clinicians who bill have an NPI, searchable on the CMS NPI Registry. Roles that prescribe controlled substances need DEA registration, which the client's credentialing team checks. Candidates rarely list either, so neither is useful in a string.

Ten Boolean strings by NP specialty and setting

Swap in the specialty, setting and state from your own intake; these are examples.

Primary care, urgent care and retail health

1. Family NP, primary care — Indeed Smart Sourcing

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support

Indeed's healthcare Boolean guide shows AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026. Its own examples use clinical settings such as the emergency department and ICU, which is how strings 1 and 2 use skill:.

LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. NPs write their credentials with and without hyphens and in several orders ("FNP-C," "FNP C," "APRN, FNP-BC"), so put the common forms in an OR block and keep "nurse practitioner" spelled out. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the Boolean filters and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems.

Google's search operators page documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Hyphenated credentials may be split by search engines, so a quoted credential is safer than a bare one.

Narrowing by state, practice authority and setting

License state is the hard constraint. An NP licensed elsewhere needs a license from the client's state board of nursing before practicing there. Ask at intake whether the client will wait, and if not, add the state to the string. NPs near state lines often hold two or three licenses, so ask every candidate.

Practice authority shapes the role. In a reduced or restricted practice state, the client needs a collaborating or supervising physician arrangement; an NP moving from a full practice state may notice the difference. Ask the client how collaboration works before the first call, so you can answer the question candidates will ask.

Setting and population focus come next. A family NP is certified across the lifespan, including young children; an adult-gerontology NP's population focus is adults, and an acute care NP's training is built for acutely ill hospital patients. Match the population focus to the client's patients first, then add setting words.

False positives worth excluding with NOT

  • Students. "FNP student" and "nurse practitioner student" profiles carry every term. Exclude "student" unless the client hires new graduates.
  • Registered nurses. RNs mention NPs in their duties. Require an NP credential to separate them. For RN searches, see Boolean search strings for nurses.
  • Physician assistants. PA-C profiles share settings and duties. Some clients will take either; ask, and add "physician assistant" to the title block only if they will.
  • The NP collision. "NP" also means nonprofit and NP-complete. Never search it alone.
  • Recruiters and faculty. Healthcare recruiters and nursing faculty list NP terms constantly. Exclude "recruiter" and, for clinical roles, "faculty" and "instructor."

An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.

Intake: An outpatient behavioral health group needs a psychiatric NP for in-person and telehealth medication management, adults and adolescents, licensed in the client's state.

Pass 1: "nurse practitioner" AND psychiatric: a mixed list including psychiatric RNs, PMHNP students, family NPs who list mental health among many conditions, and recruiters.

Pass 2: ("psychiatric nurse practitioner" OR pmhnp) AND ("pmhnp-bc" OR "board certified") NOT (student OR recruiter): relevant, though some profiles are inpatient-only.

Pass 3: add AND ("medication management" OR outpatient OR telehealth) AND (adolescents OR "across the lifespan"). ANCC's psychiatric certification covers the lifespan, but candidates who name adolescents tend to have recent experience with them. Each license is checked on the state board's lookup before submittal.

The credential block did the work the title could not. For NPs, the board certification carries the population focus.

What a search cannot verify

A string can find someone whose profile lists the right credential and setting. It cannot confirm that a license is active and unencumbered, that a certification is current, or how the NP manages a patient whose symptoms do not fit the protocol. The nurse practitioner screening questions test clinical judgment, the 30-60-90 day plan for nurse practitioners helps set expectations with the client, and the interview guide for healthcare roles covers later rounds.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between FNP-BC and FNP-C?

They come from different certifying bodies. ANCC awards FNP-BC, which its site says is valid for five years. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board, now operating as NPCB, certifies family nurse practitioners under its NP-C mark, and candidates usually write FNP-C. Both are national board certifications, so search both.

Why should I avoid searching for NP on its own?

Because the two letters also mean nonprofit, new product, net profit and NP-complete, and search engines match the letters, not the meaning. Search "nurse practitioner" in full and use credentials such as FNP-C, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC or AGACNP-BC as the short forms.

How do I verify a nurse practitioner's license and certification?

Check the license with the board of nursing in the state where the NP will practice, and the board certification with ANCC or NPCB, depending on who issued it. NPCB says employers request primary source verification through its Verify tab. The client's credentialing team will also check DEA registration if the role prescribes controlled substances. This is not legal advice.

Does it matter which state an NP practices in?

Yes. NPs are licensed by state, and the rules for independent practice vary. AANP groups states into full, reduced and restricted practice, where reduced and restricted states require a collaborative agreement or supervision. Ask the client what the role requires and whether a collaborating physician is in place.
