Respiratory therapist searches share an abbreviation with a different profession. "RT" is how respiratory therapists describe themselves, but radiologic technologists write R.T. after their names, and the same two letters mean real-time, retweet and RT-PCR. Spell the title out and the list still mixes respiratory therapy students, pulmonary function technicians, sleep technologists, nurses who manage ventilated patients and home medical equipment drivers, alongside therapists from units very different from the client's.
The NBRC credential and the unit separate them. Below are ten strings by unit and specialty, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For screening once you have a list, see the respiratory therapist screening questions.
Credentials and licenses that change what an RT search finds
| NBRC credential | What it signals | How profiles write it |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Respiratory Therapist | Entry-level credential | CRT |
| Registered Respiratory Therapist | Advanced-level credential | RRT |
| Adult Critical Care Specialist | Adult ICU specialty | RRT-ACCS or ACCS |
| Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist | NICU and PICU specialty | RRT-NPS or NPS |
| Sleep Disorders Specialist | Sleep lab specialty | SDS, often after RRT or CRT |
| Certified or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist | PFT lab | CPFT or RPFT |
- How CRT and RRT are earned now. NBRC's CRT page says the Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination has two cut scores: the low one earns CRT, and the high one earns CRT plus eligibility for the Clinical Simulation Examination. Passing that simulation earns the RRT.
- What changes in 2027. NBRC's 2027 exam announcement says a single Respiratory Therapy Examination starts in January 2027, with the low cut score earning CRT and the high cut score earning RRT, and the Clinical Simulation Examination eliminated. Candidates who pass the current exam at the high cut score before December 31, 2026 can still take the simulation through December 31, 2027. Expect new-graduate profiles to stop saying "RRT-eligible" over the next year or two.
- The state license. The AARC's state licensure table lists Alaska as the only state without respiratory therapist licensure, as of October 2026. The license is issued by the state; the NBRC credential is separate. This is not legal advice.

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support
Indeed's healthcare
Boolean guide shows AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills
section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026.
Respiratory therapists tend to list modalities such as BiPAP, ABGs and ventilator management as skills,
which is why strings 4, 6 and 7 put them behind skill:.
LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. Credentials appear as "RRT-NPS," "RRT NPS" and "RRT, NPS," and a hyphenated term may be split by the search index, so include the plain specialty phrase as well. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the filters that accept Boolean and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems.
Google's search operators page
documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Keep an X-ray
to one credential and one unit per query, as string 10 does, and quote "registered respiratory
therapist" so the radiology R.T. does not creep in.
Narrowing by credential, license and unit
Ask at intake whether the role requires RRT, accepts CRT, or accepts CRT with RRT required within a set period. That single answer decides whether "crt" belongs in the credential block. For specialty units, ask whether the specialty credential is required or simply preferred; requiring RRT-NPS for a NICU role shrinks the pool sharply, and many experienced NICU therapists never sat for it.
License comes next. Outside Alaska, the therapist needs a license from the client's state board before practicing, and a therapist moving from another state has to apply for one. Ask the client how long it can wait and whether it will consider candidates mid-application.
Unit vocabulary does the rest. Adult ICU therapists write about ventilator management, ARDS and proning; neonatal therapists write about surfactant, high-frequency ventilation and delivery room attendance; home care therapists write about oxygen setups and home ventilators. Put the client's unit vocabulary in a required block and add one term at a time.
False positives worth excluding with NOT
- Radiologic technologists. The R.T. credential and "radiology" share the abbreviation. Exclude "radiologic technologist" and "radiology" for respiratory searches. For imaging searches, see Boolean search strings for radiology technologists, which exclude respiratory terms the same way.
- Students. "Respiratory therapy student" profiles list every modality. Exclude "student" unless the client hires new graduates.
- Nurses on ventilated units. ICU nurses list ventilator care too. Require a respiratory credential. For nurse searches, see Boolean search strings for nurses.
- Equipment drivers and sales. Home medical equipment drivers and respiratory product sales representatives match "oxygen" and "ventilator." Exclude "driver," "delivery technician" and "sales."
- Perfusionists. ECMO searches pull in perfusionists, who are a different profession. Exclude "perfusionist" when the role is a respiratory therapist covering ECMO.
A worked example: three passes on a NICU search
An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.
Intake: A level III NICU needs a respiratory therapist for night shift, RRT required, neonatal experience required, NPS preferred, licensed in the client's state.
Pass 1: RT AND NICU: radiologic technologists who do portable NICU
X-rays, NICU nurses, students and a handful of respiratory therapists.
Pass 2: ("respiratory therapist" OR "registered respiratory therapist") AND
(nicu OR neonatal) AND rrt NOT ("radiologic technologist" OR radiology OR student): relevant,
though many profiles mention NICU rotations years ago.
Pass 3: add AND ("rrt-nps" OR "neonatal/pediatric specialist" OR "high
frequency" OR surfactant OR "delivery room"). Those terms tend to come from therapists who work
neonatal patients now. Each license is checked on the state board's lookup and each credential on
NBRC's verification before submittal.
The clinical terms did the work the abbreviation could not. For respiratory therapists, what they manage at the bedside places them faster than the title does.
What a search cannot verify
A string can find someone whose profile lists the right credential and unit. It cannot confirm that a license is active, that an NBRC credential is current, or how the therapist responds when a ventilated patient desaturates and the alarms disagree with the monitor. The respiratory therapist screening questions test that judgment, the recruiter phone screen template covers shift, license and logistics, and the interview guide for healthcare roles covers the department manager's round.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between CRT and RRT?
Both are NBRC credentials. Under the current exam structure, a candidate who passes the Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination at the low cut score earns CRT, and one who passes at the high cut score and then passes the Clinical Simulation Examination earns RRT. NBRC says that from January 2027 a single Respiratory Therapy Examination will award CRT at the low cut score and RRT at the high cut score.
Why does a search for RT return radiology technologists?
Because radiologic technologists also use R.T., as in R.T.(R)(ARRT), and RT also stands for real-time and retweet. Search "respiratory therapist" in full, use CRT, RRT and the specialty credentials as the short forms, and exclude radiologic terms with NOT.
Do all states license respiratory therapists?
According to the AARC's state licensure table, every state except Alaska licenses respiratory therapists as of October 2026. Check the board in the state where the therapist will work, and confirm the NBRC credential separately through NBRC. This is not legal advice.
Which NBRC credentials signal a specialty?
ACCS for adult critical care, NPS for neonatal and pediatric care and SDS for sleep disorders are NBRC specialty credentials, usually written after RRT, as in RRT-NPS. NBRC also awards CPFT and RPFT for pulmonary function testing and AE-C for asthma education.
