"Underwriter" covers at least four professions that rarely hire each other. Property and casualty insurers employ commercial and personal lines underwriters; life and health insurers employ medical underwriters; mortgage lenders employ credit underwriters who clear loan conditions; investment banks "underwrite" stock and bond offerings. On top of that, loan officers write "DU" and "LPA" because they run files through automated underwriting systems, agents and brokers list "submissions to underwriting," and underwriting assistants carry most of the vocabulary without the authority.
Line of business, authority level and the designation separate them. Below are ten strings by line, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For the interview once you have a list, see the interview guide for insurance roles.
Designations and terms that change what an underwriter search finds
| Designation or term | Source | What it signals |
|---|---|---|
| Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) | The Institutes | Broad property-casualty knowledge; held across insurance functions |
| Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) | The Institutes | Commercial lines underwriting |
| Associate in Commercial Underwriting–Management (AU-M) | The Institutes | Underwriting management |
| Associate in Personal Insurance (API) | The Institutes | Personal lines |
| DU, LPA | Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac automated underwriting systems | Mortgage experience, not necessarily underwriting authority |
- CPCU. The Institutes' CPCU page says the program includes eight courses plus ethics and takes 18 to 24 months to complete, with a matriculation requirement, as of October 2026. Because CPCU is held by claims professionals, agents and risk managers too, treat it as a seniority signal rather than proof of underwriting work.
- AU. The Institutes' AU page says the program includes four courses plus ethics, takes 9 to 12 months, and earns credit toward CPCU. The same site lists AU-M for underwriting management and API for personal insurance.
- Mortgage vocabulary. Mortgage underwriters write about conditions, DTI, reserves, appraisal review and investor guidelines; FHA-approved lenders use Direct Endorsement (DE) underwriters, and "DE underwriter" on a profile is a strong mortgage signal.

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support
Indeed's Boolean
guide documents AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills
section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026. The
guide is written for healthcare, but the operators apply to any Smart Sourcing search. Risk management
and insurance degrees make fieldofstudy: useful for early-career underwriters, as string 9
shows.
LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. Underwriters write "E&S," "excess and surplus" and "surplus lines," and "C&I" and "commercial and industrial," and the ampersand may not search reliably, so always include the spelled-out phrase. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the filters that accept Boolean and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems.
Google's search operators page
documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Quote the
full line-specific title in an X-ray and exclude the lines you do not want, as string 10 does with
"mortgage."
Narrowing by line, account size and authority
Line of business is the first filter. Within property and casualty, ask for the exact lines: a workers' compensation underwriter and a commercial property underwriter use different data, and specialty lines such as cyber or management liability have their own vocabulary. In mortgage, ask whether the role underwrites conventional, government or non-QM loans.
Account size comes next. Small commercial underwriters often work high volumes of straightforward submissions, sometimes through automated rules; middle market and large account underwriters negotiate with brokers and build complex programs. Candidates usually write the segment, such as "small commercial" or "middle market," so put it in the string.
Authority decides seniority. Underwriters write about binding authority, authority limits and referrals. An assistant who "prepared quotes" and a senior underwriter with a multimillion-dollar authority level share the same lines and designations. Ask for the candidate's authority level on the call; it is the fastest way to place them.
False positives worth excluding with NOT
- Investment bankers and capital markets staff. Exclude "capital markets," "investment banking," IPO and "syndicate" for insurance, mortgage and credit searches.
- Loan officers and processors. They write DU, LPA and "underwriting conditions." Exclude "loan officer," "loan originator" and "processor" for mortgage underwriter roles. For those roles, see the loan processor screening questions and Boolean search strings for loan officers.
- Agents and brokers. Producers and account managers list carriers, lines and "submissions." Exclude "producer," "account manager" and "agency" for carrier underwriting roles; for agent searches, see the insurance agent screening questions.
- Claims staff with a CPCU. Claims professionals hold CPCU and AIC. Exclude "claims adjuster" and "claims examiner"; for claims searches, see Boolean search strings for claims adjusters.
- Actuaries and analysts, unless wanted. Pricing actuaries and underwriting analysts share "loss ratio" and "rating." Keep them only when the client is open to a transition.
A worked example: three passes on a middle market search
An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.
Intake: A regional carrier needs a middle market commercial package underwriter, five years of experience, working with independent agents, CPCU preferred.
Pass 1: underwriter AND commercial: mortgage and bank credit
underwriters, capital markets staff, agency account managers and some insurance underwriters.
Pass 2: ("commercial lines underwriter" OR "commercial underwriter") AND
("commercial property" OR "general liability" OR "commercial package") NOT (mortgage OR bank OR "capital
markets" OR agency): relevant, though many profiles are small commercial.
Pass 3: add AND ("middle market" OR "authority" OR "independent agents" OR
"account underwriting") and leave CPCU optional. Each candidate is asked about lines, account size
and authority level on the call.
The line and segment words did the work. For underwriters, what they write and how much they can bind matters more than the designation.
What a search cannot verify
A string can find someone whose profile lists the right line and designation. It cannot show the underwriter's judgment on a marginal risk, how they decline a broker's best account without losing the broker, or whether their loss ratios held up. The interview guide for insurance roles covers those, and for analyst roles at the same client, see Boolean search strings for financial analysts.
Questions people ask
What are the CPCU and AU designations?
Both come from The Institutes. The Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) program includes eight courses plus ethics and takes 18 to 24 months, by The Institutes' description; the Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) includes four courses plus ethics and takes 9 to 12 months, and earns credit toward CPCU. Despite its name, CPCU is held by claims, agency and risk management professionals as well as underwriters.
Why does an underwriter search return investment bankers?
Because underwriting is also what investment banks do when they bring stock and bond offerings to market, so equity and debt capital markets staff write it on their profiles. Exclude "capital markets," IPO, "investment banking" and "equity research" with NOT for insurance and mortgage searches.
Is a loan officer who writes DU or LPA an underwriter?
Usually not. Desktop Underwriter (DU) is Fannie Mae's automated underwriting system and Loan Product Advisor (LPA) is Freddie Mac's, and loan officers and processors run files through them every day. Require human underwriting terms such as "credit decisions," "conditions" or "manual underwriting" for mortgage underwriter roles.
Should I search by line of business or by title?
By line of business. A commercial property underwriter, a life underwriter and a mortgage underwriter share a title and little else. Ask the client for the line, the account size and the authority level, and put the line terms in a required block.
