A dental assistant posting that says "chairside experience, x-ray certified, Dentrix a plus" leaves out what an experienced assistant checks first: which procedures, which specialty, how many chairs and doctors, and whether "x-ray certified" means what their state requires. Dental assisting is regulated by each state, so the credential line and the duty list must match the state where the practice is. A good dental assistant job description names the seat type and specialty, lists only the duties your state allows for the credential required, and is clear about schedule and pace. Below are the seat types, state x-ray rules with California and Texas examples, a copy-ready template, screening and scorecard rows, and common mistakes. For the call itself, use dental assistant screening questions.

Choose the seat type and specialty

Seat typeWhat the day looks likeMust-have that separates it
General chairsideSeating patients, four-handed assisting on fillings and crowns, impressions or scans, room turnover, sterilizationHas assisted a full schedule for one dentist; knows the instruments and materials
OrthodonticMany short appointments, wire changes, bonding prep, scans, patient instructionsOrtho experience; pace with many patients per day
Oral surgeryExtractions, implants, sedation monitoring support, surgical sterile fieldSurgical assisting; any sedation-related permit your state requires
PediatricChildren and parents, behavior guidance, sealants and fluoride where allowedComfort with children; the state credential for the preventive duties delegated
Expanded function (EFDA, RDA or the state's term)Placing restorations or other duties delegated under the state's expanded-function rulesThe state's expanded-function credential

Settle the pace with the office manager: number of doctors and chairs, patients per assistant per day, whether the assistant also covers the front desk, and the scheduling system and imaging software. A line such as "two doctors, six chairs, about 12 patients per assistant a day" (an invented example) tells a candidate more than "fast-paced office."

State rules on x-rays and expanded duties

Not legal advice. The points below were checked against BLS, the Dental Board of California, the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and the Dental Assisting National Board as of October 2026. Each state sets its own scope of practice; confirm the rules for your state before posting.

BLS notes that each state regulates the scope of practice for dental assistants, and that states may require specific licensing for work in radiography, infection control or other specialties (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified August 27, 2026). Two examples show how much the posting line changes:

  • California. An unlicensed dental assistant may operate dental radiographic equipment only after passing a Board-approved radiation safety course (Dental Board of California). The registered dental assistant (RDA) and RDA in extended functions (RDAEF) are licensed by the Board and may perform additional duties. A California posting that lists x-rays should say "Board-approved radiation safety course completed," and should name the RDA or RDAEF license only if the role uses those duties.
  • Texas. To position or expose dental x-rays, a dental assistant must hold a Dental Assistant Radiology Certificate from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Routes include a board-approved course and exam, or a current DANB CDA plus the board's jurisprudence assessment, with current hands-on BLS/CPR, a human trafficking prevention course and a fingerprint background check (TSBDE).

National certification. The DANB Certified Dental Assistant exam combines Radiation Health and Safety, Infection Control and General Chairside Assisting, and every eligibility pathway requires current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS (DANB CDA exam). Treat it as a strong nice to have unless your state or practice requires it.

Pay and EEO

Post the hourly range and explain any production or collection bonus in one line. If credentialed assistants are paid more, say so; it encourages candidates to finish their state credential. The BLS dental assistant profile linked above publishes pay data; this page does not quote figures. Close with an EEO statement covering the characteristics the EEOC lists. Immunization and health requirements belong after a conditional offer; see pre-employment medical exams under the ADA.

The full screen with red flags is in dental assistant screening questions. For hygiene roles in the same practice, use dental hygienist screening questions. The medical assistant job description template shows the same approach to state scope rules, and the interview guide for healthcare roles covers the rest of the loop.

Common mistakes in dental assistant job descriptions

"X-ray certified" without the state's term

Each state names the credential differently. Use the exact name so candidates know what you will verify.

Duties copied from another state

Expanded functions allowed in one state may be off limits in another. List only what your state allows for the credential you require.

No specialty or pace

An ortho assistant and an oral surgery assistant are not interchangeable. Name the specialty and the patient load.

Requiring DANB when the state does not

Making the CDA a must-have can turn away experienced assistants who meet your state's rules. Put it under nice to have unless required.

Before you publish

  • Seat type, specialty, doctors, chairs and patient load are in the summary.
  • The x-ray and expanded-function lines match your state's rules and credential names.
  • Pay and any bonus method are stated.
  • Health requirements are listed as post-offer conditions, with an accommodation contact.
  • The EEO statement closes the posting.

Questions people ask

Can a dental assistant take x-rays without a license?

It depends on the state. In California, an unlicensed dental assistant may operate dental radiographic equipment only after passing a Board-approved radiation safety course. In Texas, a dental assistant must hold a Dental Assistant Radiology Certificate from the state board to position or expose dental x-rays. Check your state dental board before listing x-rays as a duty.

Is DANB certification required for dental assistants?

Not nationally. The Certified Dental Assistant credential from the Dental Assisting National Board is voluntary in many states, though some states use DANB exams as part of their own requirements. Texas, for example, accepts a current DANB CDA plus its jurisprudence assessment as one route to the radiology certificate.

What does the DANB CDA exam cover?

The CDA exam combines three component exams taken together: Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE) and General Chairside Assisting (GC). DANB also requires current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS from an accepted provider for every eligibility pathway.

Should a dental assistant posting list expanded functions?

Only the ones your state allows for the credential the role requires, and only if the dentist will delegate them. BLS notes that each state regulates the scope of practice for dental assistants, so a duty list copied from another state can include tasks your assistant may not legally perform.
