"HVAC tech wanted, 3+ years, EPA certified" draws everyone from a new-construction installer to a chiller mechanic, because it does not say which equipment, which customers or what the on-call week looks like. Those details decide who will be good at the job and who will stay. A useful HVAC technician job description names the work type and equipment, the EPA Section 608 type you need, any state registration, the van and the on-call rotation, and the pay structure in plain numbers. Below are the work-type choices, the credential lines with sources, a copy-ready template, screening and scorecard rows, and common mistakes. The phone screen itself is covered in HVAC technician screening questions.
Not legal advice. EPA, Texas and BLS points were checked against the agency pages linked here as of October 2026. Many states and cities license HVAC contractors or register technicians; confirm the rules where the work is done.
Pick the work type before the title
| Work type | What the week looks like | Must-have that separates it |
|---|---|---|
| Residential service | No-cool and no-heat calls, maintenance agreements, diagnostics in homes, options presented to the homeowner | Diagnoses alone in the field; comfortable explaining repair options to a homeowner |
| Residential install | Changeouts and new construction, line sets, brazing, startup and commissioning | Has completed full system changeouts as lead or helper; brazing |
| Light commercial service | Rooftop units, split systems in stores and offices, economizers, preventive maintenance routes | Rooftop unit diagnostics; works on customer sites with their access rules |
| Commercial refrigeration | Walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-ins, ice machines, racks | Refrigeration diagnostics, defrost and controls; refrigerant record-keeping |
| Controls or building automation | Sequences, sensors, building automation front ends, troubleshooting with the mechanical crew | Has read and changed control sequences on a named platform |
Then settle the level. A helper or apprentice works under a lead and is learning to diagnose; a service technician runs calls alone; a lead or senior technician handles the hard calls and rides with newer techs. Write the level in the title, and put the on-call pattern (for example, one week in five, as an example rotation) in the summary, because it matters as much to a candidate as the hourly rate.
EPA Section 608, state registration and the other credentials
EPA Section 608. Technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of appliances in ways that could release refrigerant must be certified, including attaching and detaching gauges and adding or removing refrigerant. Apprentices are exempt while "closely and continually supervised" by a certified technician (EPA, Section 608 technician certification requirements). There are four types:
- Type I: small appliances.
- Type II: high- and very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and motor vehicle air conditioning.
- Type III: low-pressure appliances.
- Universal: all three types.
EPA says Section 608 credentials do not expire. Only certified technicians, or employers that show a wholesaler they employ at least one, may buy most refrigerants (EPA refrigerant sales restriction). In the posting, name the type your equipment needs, or ask for Universal if technicians move between equipment.
State registration, with one example. In Texas, anyone who assists a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor with maintenance or repair work must register as a technician, works under the contractor's supervision, and renews the registration every year (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation). A Texas posting should say "Texas ACR technician registration (or certified technician license), or able to register before start." Other states license only the contractor, and some cities add their own rules. BLS notes that some states and localities require HVAC technicians to be licensed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified August 27, 2026).
Voluntary credentials. NATE certification, manufacturer training and an OSHA outreach card are useful but voluntary. Put them under nice to have unless a customer contract requires them.

Pay structure and EEO
HVAC pay often mixes hourly, commission or spiffs and on-call pay. Post the hourly range and explain each variable part in one line with how it is calculated; a candidate cannot compare "competitive pay plus incentives." The BLS profile for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers (linked above, last modified August 27, 2026) publishes pay data; this page does not quote figures. Close with an EEO statement covering the characteristics the EEOC lists. A driving record check is usually a consumer report, so follow the disclosure and consent steps in the FCRA background check process.
From must-haves to screening questions and scorecard rows
| Must-have | Screening question | Scorecard competency | Evidence of a strong answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 608 type | "Which 608 type do you hold and which organization certified you?" | Not scored: card checked | Type matches your equipment |
| Diagnosis alone | "Walk me through a no-cool call on a heat pump from the moment you arrive." | Diagnostic method | Checks thermostat and power, then airflow, then refrigerant side with measured readings; does not jump to adding refrigerant |
| Work type match | "In the last year, roughly what share of your calls were service, maintenance and install, and on what equipment?" | Relevant experience | Specific mix and brands; matches the role |
| Customer explanation | "How do you explain a repair-or-replace decision to a homeowner?" | Customer communication | Clear options with costs and trade-offs; no pressure language |
| On-call | "The rotation is one week in five, evenings and weekends, response within [N] hours. Does that work?" | Not scored | Knockout confirmed |
The wider interview structure for trades, including a ride-along or shop test, is in the interview guide for skilled trades. If the job is mostly building systems with some HVAC, compare it with maintenance technician screening questions; for the electrical side of controls work, the electrician job description template shows how to word licensing lines.
Common mistakes in HVAC technician job descriptions
"EPA certified" with no type
A Type I card does not cover a rooftop unit. Name the type, or ask for Universal.
Hiding the on-call week
Experienced technicians ask about on-call first. If it is not in the posting, the call is spent on it and the candidates who will not do it drop out late.
Vague commission
"Uncapped earning potential" tells no one what they will make. Say what the commission is paid on and how.
Requiring a contractor license for a technician job
In many states the license belongs to the contractor, not the technician. Ask for what the technician must hold where you work.
Before you publish
- Work type, equipment, level and service area are in the title and summary.
- The 608 type is named, with the apprentice line if you take apprentices.
- The state registration or license line matches where the work is done.
- Hourly range, commission method and on-call pay are each explained.
- The vehicle, tools you provide and the driving record standard are stated.
Questions people ask
Does an HVAC technician need EPA certification?
Anyone who maintains, services, repairs or disposes of equipment in a way that could release refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, with an exception for apprentices who are closely and continually supervised by a certified technician. Name the certification type your equipment needs in the posting.
Does EPA 608 certification expire?
No. EPA says Section 608 technician certification credentials do not expire. Ask for the card or the certifying organization's record and check that the type matches your equipment.
Can an HVAC posting accept apprentices without 608 certification?
Yes, if they will work under close and continual supervision of a certified technician, which EPA allows. Say so in the posting and state when you expect the apprentice to pass the exam.
Is NATE certification required for HVAC technicians?
No federal rule requires it. NATE is a voluntary industry certification that some employers prefer. Put it under nice to have unless a customer contract requires it, so experienced technicians without it still apply.
