AI interview assistants for interviewers: real-time help compared
On this page
An AI interview assistant for interviewers helps the person running the interview while the call is happening: it shows the question guide, tracks what has been covered, suggests follow-ups and takes notes, then drafts the scorecard. As of October 2026, the tools that advertise live help for interviewers are BrightHire (real-time guides), Employ's AI Interview Companion (formerly Pillar), Bullhorn's Transcribe Live for agencies, HireLogic's companion app and Interview Signal. Most other note takers, including Metaview, do their work after the call.
We make Interview Signal, one of the tools below; everything about the other products comes from their own sites, linked and dated. One note on the term: "AI interview assistant" also describes apps that feed answers to candidates. This page is about tools for the interviewer. If you are worried about the other kind, see tools to detect AI use in interviews.
What can an AI assistant do for the interviewer during a call?
- Keep the plan in view. The questions for this role and stage, with must-ask items marked.
- Track coverage. Which competencies or questions have been addressed, so nothing is missed with ten minutes left.
- Suggest follow-ups. When an answer is vague, a prompt to ask for a specific example or a number.
- Take notes. A live transcript, so the interviewer can listen and keep eye contact instead of typing.
- Draft the score. A scorecard filled from the answers, which the interviewer confirms or changes.
The value is greatest for people who interview occasionally, such as hiring managers and panel members. Our first-time hiring manager guide covers the skills these tools support but do not replace.
How is an interview assistant different from a note taker?
The categories overlap, and vendors use the labels loosely, so it helps to ask one question: when does the tool do its work?
- Note takers work after the call. You get a transcript and summary, sometimes a draft scorecard. They help with documentation, not with the interview itself. We compare them in the best AI note takers for recruiters.
- Interview intelligence platforms add analytics across many interviews: talk time, question quality, interviewer coaching. See interview intelligence software.
- Interview assistants work during the call. Their value is a better interview: the right questions asked, vague answers probed, nothing important skipped.
If your interviews are already well run and your problem is write-ups, a note taker is enough. If interviewers forget questions, accept vague answers, or type through the conversation, you want live help. Without any tool, the habits in how to take interview notes as a hiring manager get you part of the way.

The assistants one by one
BrightHire
BrightHire describes "real-time guides, prompting your interviewers with the right questions," and says its notes are generated in real time; interview topic coverage is listed on its Teams tier (BrightHire pricing). Zoom now owns BrightHire. Best for: large in-house teams that interview on Zoom and want guidance plus coaching analytics. Weak spot: no public price, and a participant joins on Meet and Teams.
Employ AI Interview Companion
Formerly Pillar, which Employ announced it had acquired in March 2025, the Companion generates interview questions from a pasted job description and promises to "guide interviewers, live in the interview" and collect feedback in real time. Employ states it "does not provide candidate scoring or hiring recommendations" (Employ). It joins Zoom, Meet and Teams interviews automatically. Best for: enterprise teams that want guidance without AI scoring. Weak spot: no Bullhorn integration listed, so it is not aimed at agencies.
Bullhorn Transcribe Live
Bullhorn's Amplify Transcribe records and summarizes calls into the Bullhorn record, and its optional Transcribe Live mode adds a prep sheet and live insights during the call once an admin configures it (Bullhorn). Best for: Bullhorn agencies that want live help without another vendor.
Vincere Meeting Assistant and HireLogic
Vincere lists a Meeting Assistant with "live call transcription, CRM sync and follow-up drafts, done while you talk" from its Core plan (Vincere). HireLogic's companion app can capture ratings or responses on any question and take manual notes, and it can generate questions and save them as interview guide templates (HireLogic). Best for: Vincere agencies, and teams that interview in person as often as on video, respectively.
Interview Signal
Our desktop app runs beside Zoom, Teams, Meet or a phone screen taken through the computer, with no bot. It labels the microphone as the interviewer and the meeting audio as the candidate, shows a live transcript and a question guide built from the job description, keeps must-ask questions pinned until they are asked, and suggests follow-ups with a reason: probe, clarify or evidence. The scorecard fills as the interview goes, Evaluate scores on demand, and an optional second model (Dual AI) gives a second opinion. A private answer check flags answers that read as AI-written or read out, with a question to try; it never changes a score. Best for: recruiters and hiring managers who want help while they are still talking to the candidate. Weak spots: no ATS integration, Windows and macOS only with no mobile or web app, no video recording, and few public reviews so far.
Will a live assistant distract the interviewer?
It can, if it asks for too much attention. Three habits keep it useful:
- Prepare before the call. Read the guide and the resume for five minutes so the screen is a reminder, not a script.
- Glance, do not read. Check coverage at natural pauses, such as after each answer, rather than mid-sentence.
- Treat suggestions as optional. A suggested follow-up is a prompt; ask it only if it moves you toward evidence.
If you are on a panel, agree who asks what before the call; our panel interview tips cover the split.
How to trial an AI interview assistant
- Pick two interviewers: one experienced, one who interviews rarely.
- Use the same guide for five real interviews each, with candidates told about the tool.
- After each interview, check whether every must-ask question was covered and whether each score has a quote behind it.
- Ask the interviewers whether the tool helped them listen or pulled them away.
- Compare the time from end of call to a finished scorecard.
Any tool that transcribes the call needs a consent step. Use our interview recording consent script and check the rules where you and the candidate are. If a tool scores or ranks candidates and you hire for New York City, Local Law 144 may treat it as an automated employment decision tool, which requires a bias audit within one year of use and notice to candidates 10 business days before use (NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, checked October 2026). This is not legal advice.
Questions people ask
What is an AI interview assistant for interviewers?
It is software that helps the person running the interview, not the candidate. During the call it can show a question guide, track which topics have been covered, suggest follow-up questions and take notes; afterwards it drafts the scorecard or write-up. It is different from note takers that only produce a summary after the call ends.
Which AI tools give interviewers live guidance during the interview?
As of October 2026, BrightHire advertises real-time guides that prompt interviewers with questions, Employ's AI Interview Companion promises to guide interviewers live, Bullhorn offers an optional Transcribe Live mode with a prep sheet and live insights, and Interview Signal shows a live question guide, pinned must-ask questions and suggested follow-ups. Metaview and most general note takers focus on notes after the call.
Does an AI interview assistant score the candidate?
Some do and some deliberately do not. Employ states that its AI Interview Companion does not provide candidate scoring or hiring recommendations, while Metaview and Interview Signal draft scorecards for the interviewer to confirm. In every case the interviewer should own the final score and be able to see the evidence behind it.
Is it legal to use an AI assistant in a job interview?
Generally yes, but if it records or transcribes the call, recording consent rules apply, and in some states everyone on the call must agree. If the tool scores or ranks candidates, AI hiring rules such as New York City's Local Law 144 may also apply. Tell candidates, use a consent script, and check the rules where you and the candidate are. This is not legal advice.
