"Case manager" is one title for at least six jobs. Hospitals use it for nurses doing utilization review and discharge planning; health plans for nurses managing members by phone; workers' compensation carriers for nurses coordinating injured workers' care; community agencies for social workers helping clients find housing and benefits. Law firms call litigation support staff case managers, and software companies sell "case management" platforms whose consultants list the phrase on every project. A search on the title alone returns all of them.

Setting, license and the work vocabulary separate them. Below are ten strings by setting, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For social work searches, see Boolean search strings for social workers; for RN searches, Boolean search strings for nurses.

Credentials that change what a case manager search finds

CredentialIssued byWhere it is common
CCM (Board-Certified Case Manager)The Commission, formerly the Commission for Case Manager CertificationHospital, payer, workers' compensation and community case management
CDMS (Certified Disability Management Specialist)The CommissionDisability and return-to-work programs
ACM-RN, ACM-SW (Accredited Case Manager)American Case Management AssociationHospital and transitions-of-care case management
  • The CCM and the new name. The Commission's FAQ about its name says the Commission for Case Manager Certification began using the name The Commission on February 24, 2026, with CCM and CDMS certification and recertification unchanged. Its CCM page now calls the credential Board-Certified Case Manager, so profiles may say either "certified case manager" or "board-certified case manager," and may name either organization.
  • CCM eligibility. The Commission's eligibility summary lists a qualifying license (such as RN or LCSW), a health or human services degree, or a qualifying certification, plus 12 or 24 months of full-time case management experience or 12 months as a supervisor of case managers, as of October 2026.
  • The ACM. The American Case Management Association's ACM page describes one certification program with two credentials, ACM-RN and ACM-SW, built for health delivery system and transitions-of-care case managers.

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support

Indeed's healthcare Boolean guide shows AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026. Case managers come from nursing and social work degrees, so fieldofstudy: is a cheap way to drop legal and software profiles, as string 9 does.

LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. Case managers write "UR," "utilization review" and "utilization management," and "care manager," "care coordinator" and "case manager," so write the variants out. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the filters that accept Boolean and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems; put the title variants in Job titles and the setting vocabulary in Keywords.

Google's search operators page documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Pair the title with one setting term in each X-ray, as string 10 does, and run a second X-ray for each setting.

Narrowing by setting, license and caseload

Setting is the first intake question and the one most often skipped. Ask whether the role sits in a hospital, a health plan, a workers' compensation program, a provider group or a community agency, and whether it is on-site, field-based or telephonic. Each has its own vocabulary: InterQual, MCG and observation status in hospitals; care plans, HEDIS and member outreach at health plans; return to work and independent medical exams in workers' compensation; housing and benefits in community programs.

License comes next. Utilization review and payer care management usually need an RN; discharge planning may accept a social worker; community case management often accepts a bachelor's degree. Ask the client, then put RN, LCSW, LMSW or degree terms in the license block. A multistate nursing license matters for telephonic roles that cover members in several states.

Caseload decides the rest. A hospital case manager covering a 30-bed unit, a telephonic care manager carrying 80 members and a field case manager with 25 injured workers do very different days. Ask candidates for their current caseload on the call.

False positives worth excluding with NOT

  • Legal case managers. Law firm case managers and paralegals list "case management," "intake" and "medical records." Exclude "paralegal," "litigation," "law firm" and "attorney."
  • Software and customer service. Consultants who implement case management platforms, and support agents who "manage cases," match the phrase. Exclude "Salesforce," "Service Cloud," "implementation" and "customer support."
  • Insurance claims staff. Claims adjusters and examiners also "manage cases" for injured workers. Exclude "claims adjuster" and "claims examiner" for nurse case manager roles; for claims searches, see Boolean search strings for claims adjusters.
  • Immigration and court case managers. Immigration services, courts and probation departments use the title for non-clinical roles. Exclude "immigration," "probation" and "court" unless the client is one of them.
  • Unit secretaries and coordinators. Case management assistants and coordinators list the department name. Require a license or a clinical task for licensed roles.

A worked example: three passes on a hospital utilization review search

An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.

Intake: An acute care hospital needs an RN case manager for utilization review on medical-surgical units, InterQual experience required, CCM or ACM preferred, licensed in the client's state or holding a multistate license.

Pass 1: "case manager" AND RN: health plan nurses, workers' compensation field nurses, a litigation case manager who is also an RN, and some hospital case managers.

Pass 2: ("rn case manager" OR "nurse case manager") AND ("utilization review" OR interqual OR "medical necessity") NOT (paralegal OR litigation OR "workers compensation"): relevant, though many profiles are payer-side reviewers.

Pass 3: add AND (hospital OR "acute care" OR "observation status" OR "concurrent review") and leave CCM and ACM as optional terms. Each license is checked on Nursys or the state board, and each credential with its issuer before submittal.

The hospital vocabulary did the work. For case managers, the setting words are the only reliable way to tell six jobs apart.

What a search cannot verify

A string can find someone whose profile lists the right setting and credential. It cannot confirm a license or certification, show how the case manager argues medical necessity with a payer, or tell you how they handle a family that refuses every discharge option. The social worker screening questions cover much of the discharge planning judgment, and the interview guide for healthcare roles covers the case management director's round.

Questions people ask

What is the CCM?

The CCM is a case management certification from the organization formerly called the Commission for Case Manager Certification, which began using the name The Commission on February 24, 2026. Its site now calls the credential Board-Certified Case Manager, though many profiles still say Certified Case Manager. Eligibility combines a license, degree or certification with qualifying case management employment.

What is the difference between CCM and ACM?

The ACM is the American Case Management Association's credential for health delivery system and transitions-of-care case managers, issued as ACM-RN for nurses and ACM-SW for social workers. The CCM spans more settings, including payers, workers' compensation and community programs. Hospital case management departments often recognize both.

Why does a case manager search return paralegals and software consultants?

Because law firms employ litigation case managers, and "case management" is also a software category, including customer service platforms. Require a clinical or social service term such as discharge planning, utilization review or care coordination, and exclude litigation, paralegal and Salesforce with NOT.

Should a hospital case manager search require an RN?

Only if the client's role requires it. Many hospital departments staff utilization review with RN case managers and discharge planning with social workers. Ask the client which license the role needs, then put RN or LCSW and LMSW terms in the license block accordingly.
