Dental assistant searches run into a crowded office. Hygienists, front desk coordinators, treatment coordinators and office managers all list the same practice software and patient-care terms; dental students and lab technicians mention chairside work; dental supply reps visit every operatory. The credential itself has an abbreviation problem, because CDA is also the California Dental Association and a health data standard. And state titles add another layer: a registered dental assistant in one state and an expanded function dental assistant in another may hold very different permits.
Specialty, radiography and the state title separate them. Below are ten strings by specialty, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For screening once you have a list, see the dental assistant screening questions.
Credentials and state titles that change what a dental assistant search finds
| Credential or title | Issued by | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) | DANB | GC, RHS and ICE exams |
| National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA) | DANB | ICE, RHS and Anatomy, Morphology and Physiology (AMP) exams |
| Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) | DANB | ICE and Orthodontic Assisting (OA) exams |
| Registered dental assistant (RDA) | A state dental board, such as California's | State education, exam and permitted duties |
| Expanded function dental assistant (EFDA) | A state dental board, where the state uses the title | Additional duties set by the state |
- DANB's CDA. DANB's exams page says the CDA certification is made up of Infection Control (ICE), Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) and General Chairside Assisting (GC), as of October 2026. The CDA exam page lists pathways including graduation from a CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program, or at least 3,500 hours of approved work experience plus high school graduation, and requires current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS from a DANB-accepted provider for every pathway.
- The component exams. DANB says the RHS exam is recognized or required in many states. That is why profiles often list "RHS" or "radiation certified" without a full CDA.
- State titles. The Dental Board of California's RDA page describes California's state license, with its own courses, exam and pathways, and California also licenses RDAs in extended functions. Other states use titles such as EFDA. Check the client's state dental board for the exact title and what it allows. This is not legal advice.

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support
Indeed's healthcare
Boolean guide shows AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills
section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026.
Dental assistants usually list software and procedures in their skills section, which is why the
strings put Dentrix, Eaglesoft and chairside tasks behind skill:.
LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards. Assistants write "x-ray certified," "radiology certified," "radiography" and "RHS" for the same qualification, so write the variants out. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the filters that accept Boolean and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems; keep specialty titles in Job titles and procedures in Keywords.
Google's search operators page
documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Write
"certified dental assistant" in full in an X-ray rather than CDA, as string 10 does, so the association
and the data standard stay out.
Narrowing by state permit, specialty and practice size
The state permit comes first. Ask the client which duties the role includes, such as taking radiographs, coronal polishing or placing sealants, and which state credential each one needs. That answer decides whether "RHS," "RDA" or "EFDA" belongs in a required block. An assistant moving from another state may need new courses or exams before performing the same duties.
Specialty comes next. Orthodontic assistants change wires and scan for aligners; oral surgery assistants monitor sedated patients; pediatric assistants manage anxious children and parents. Most general dentistry assistants can learn a specialty, but a busy specialty practice usually wants someone who has done it. Use the specialty terms as a required block when the client says so.
Practice size decides the rest. Assistants at large group practices often write about high patient volume and multiple doctors; assistants at small practices write about covering the front desk and ordering supplies. Neither is better, but the client usually knows which it needs.
False positives worth excluding with NOT
- Dental hygienists. Hygienists share the software and many procedures. Exclude "dental hygienist," RDH and "hygiene" for assistant roles. For hygienist searches, see Boolean search strings for dental hygienists.
- Front office staff. Front desk, scheduling and treatment coordinators list Dentrix and insurance terms. Exclude "front desk," "treatment coordinator" and "insurance coordinator" for clinical roles; for those roles, see the dental receptionist screening questions.
- The CDA abbreviation. California Dental Association staff and HL7 Clinical Document Architecture specialists match CDA. Exclude "HL7," "interoperability" and "association" when CDA is in the string.
- Dental students, lab technicians and sales reps. Each mentions chairside or restorative work. Exclude "dental student," "dental lab," "laboratory technician" and "sales."
- RDA as a nutrition term. RDA also means recommended dietary allowance. Exclude "nutrition" and "dietary" when RDA is in a string, as string 7 does.
A worked example: three passes on an orthodontic search
An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.
Intake: A three-doctor orthodontic practice needs a full-time orthodontic assistant, radiography qualification required by the state, aligner scanning experience preferred, Saturday clinics once a month.
Pass 1: "dental assistant" AND orthodontic: general dentistry
assistants who referred patients to an orthodontist, treatment coordinators, aligner sales reps and some
orthodontic assistants.
Pass 2: ("orthodontic assistant" OR "ortho assistant") AND ("wire changes" OR
"bracket placement" OR bonding) NOT ("treatment coordinator" OR sales OR hygienist): relevant,
though some profiles show orthodontic work years ago.
Pass 3: add AND ("intraoral scanner" OR itero OR invisalign OR "clear
aligners") AND ("x-ray certified" OR rhs OR "radiology certified"). The state radiography
credential is checked with the issuing board or DANB before submittal, and the Saturday schedule is
confirmed on the call.
The procedure terms did the work. For dental assistants, what they do at the chair places them faster than the title does.
What a search cannot verify
A string can find someone whose profile lists the right specialty and credential. It cannot confirm a state permit, show infection control habits, or tell you how the assistant handles a patient who gags on every impression. The dental assistant screening questions test that judgment, the dental assistant job description template helps the client state which duties need which permit, and the interview guide for dental roles covers the dentist's round.
Questions people ask
What exams make up DANB's CDA?
DANB's Certified Dental Assistant certification is made up of three exams: General Chairside Assisting (GC), Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) and Infection Control (ICE). DANB lists eligibility pathways that include graduating from a CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program, or at least 3,500 hours of approved work experience plus high school graduation, and every pathway requires current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS from a DANB-accepted provider.
Is a registered dental assistant the same as a CDA?
No. A CDA is DANB's national certification. A registered dental assistant, such as California's RDA, is a state license issued by a state dental board, with its own education, exam and duties. Some states use other titles, such as expanded function dental assistant. Check the client's state board for the title and what it allows.
Why does a CDA search return software and association profiles?
Because CDA is also the abbreviation of the California Dental Association and of HL7's Clinical Document Architecture, a health data standard. Write "certified dental assistant" in full alongside CDA, and exclude HL7, interoperability and association terms with NOT.
Should I exclude dental hygienists from a dental assistant search?
Usually yes. Hygienists share the office, the software and many terms, but they hold a separate license and are rarely looking for an assistant role. Exclude "dental hygienist," RDH and "hygiene" unless the client wants a crossover candidate.
