LPN searches return more registered nurses than LPNs. A large share of RNs started as practical nurses and keep the title in their work history, nursing students list "LPN program" in their education, and the same job is called licensed vocational nurse in California and Texas. Add certified medication aides in long-term care, who pass meds without a nursing license, and practical nursing instructors who write "LPN" in every line, and a raw search mixes several professions.

The license title, the setting and the current role separate them. Below are ten strings by setting, and what Indeed, LinkedIn and Google support as of October 2026. For RN searches, see Boolean search strings for nurses; for the screen, see the LPN screening questions.

Licenses and exams that change what an LPN search finds

These are the facts that shape the title and license blocks, as of October 2026. Scope of practice is set by each state's board of nursing, so check the client's board. This is not legal advice.

TermWhat it meansHow profiles write it
Licensed practical nurseThe title most states useLPN, "licensed practical nurse"
Licensed vocational nurseThe title California and Texas useLVN, "licensed vocational nurse"
NCLEX-PNThe licensure exam for practical and vocational nursesNCLEX-PN, "passed NCLEX," NGN
Multistate licenseCompact license valid in member states"compact license," "multistate license," NLC
  • The exam. Practical and vocational nurses pass the NCLEX-PN, developed by NCSBN. NCSBN's Next Generation NCLEX page says the NGN launched on April 1, 2023, to better measure clinical judgment, so recent graduates may write "NGN" or "Next Gen NCLEX."
  • The LVN title. California's Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians licenses LVNs, and the Texas Board of Nursing verifies LVN and RN licenses. A nurse who trained in either state will often keep "LVN" on a profile after moving.
  • The compact. The Nurse Licensure Compact, in the text enacted by member states such as Virginia, covers both RNs and LPN/VNs. NCSBN's compact site says 43 jurisdictions are part of the NLC as of October 2026, with implementation details by state. A multistate license is issued by the nurse's home state, so a nurse living in a non-member state needs a license in the client's state.

What Indeed, LinkedIn and Google actually support

Indeed's healthcare Boolean guide shows AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, a skill: field for the skills section, and fieldofstudy: and school: for education, as of October 2026. Practical nursing programs are certificates or diplomas, and candidates name them inconsistently, so fieldofstudy: works for new-graduate searches like string 9 and less well for experienced nurses, whose skills sections are more reliable.

LinkedIn's Boolean help page requires capital AND, OR and NOT, supports quotes and parentheses, and does not support wildcards, so "licensed practical nurse" and "licensed vocational nurse" each have to be written out. LinkedIn Recruiter's Boolean page lists Job titles among the filters that accept Boolean and warns that too many facets in one query can cause problems. Put LPN and LVN in Job titles, which is where a current title lives, and the setting in Keywords; that alone drops many RNs whose LPN title is several jobs back.

Google's search operators page documents quotes, site:, the minus sign and filetype:, but not OR. Run one title per X-ray, as string 10 does, and a second pass with "licensed vocational nurse" for Texas or California clients.

Narrowing by license state, setting and current title

License state comes first. Ask the client whether a compact license is acceptable, and if the client's state is not a compact member, search for nurses already licensed there. A nurse moving from another state applies for licensure by endorsement, and the client should say how long it can wait.

Setting comes next, because LPN work varies more by setting than RN work does. Long-term care LPNs write about med passes for a hall of residents, treatments, admissions and supervising aides; clinic LPNs write about injections, rooming patients and phone triage; home health and private duty LPNs write about trach and g-tube care for one patient. Use the client's setting words as a required block.

Current title decides the rest. Searching the title field rather than the whole profile is the cleanest way to find working LPNs. Where a platform searches the whole profile, exclude "registered nurse" and "RN" together with care: some LPNs write "working toward my RN," and a client with tuition support may want exactly those candidates. Ask before excluding them.

False positives worth excluding with NOT

  • RNs with an LPN history. Exclude "registered nurse," BSN, ADN and "LPN to RN" when the client wants a career LPN. Keep them when a client is open to RNs in LPN-scope roles, which some long-term care facilities are.
  • Nursing students. Practical nursing and RN students list "LPN program" and clinical rotations. Exclude "nursing student" unless the client hires new graduates.
  • Medication aides and CNAs. Certified medication aides and nurse aides share "med pass" and "resident care." Require the LPN or LVN title. For aide searches, see Boolean search strings for CNAs.
  • Instructors and recruiters. Practical nursing instructors and facility recruiters mention LPNs constantly. Exclude "instructor," "faculty" and "recruiter."
  • Canadian profiles. Several Canadian provinces also use the LPN title, and Ontario uses registered practical nurse. Add a location filter, because a Canadian license does not authorize practice in a U.S. state.

An invented search, shown as it actually gets narrowed.

Intake: A skilled nursing facility needs an evening-shift LPN for a 30-bed long-term care hall, licensed in the client's state or holding a compact license, at least one year of long-term care experience.

Pass 1: LPN AND "long-term care": RNs who were LPNs a decade ago, medication aides, a practical nursing instructor and some working LPNs.

Pass 2: ("licensed practical nurse" OR lpn OR lvn) AND ("long-term care" OR "skilled nursing") AND ("med pass" OR treatments OR admissions) NOT ("registered nurse" OR instructor OR "nursing student"), with LPN in the title field on LinkedIn Recruiter: relevant, though some profiles are day-shift clinic nurses who picked up weekend facility shifts years ago.

Pass 3: add AND ("evening shift" OR "3-11" OR "second shift" OR "charge nurse"). Each license is checked on the state board's lookup or Nursys before submittal, and the compact status is confirmed rather than assumed from the profile.

Searching the current title did most of the work. For LPNs, where the title sits on the profile matters as much as whether it is there.

What a search cannot verify

A string can find someone whose profile lists the right title and setting. It cannot confirm that a license is active and unencumbered, what IV or assessment duties the client's state lets an LPN perform, or how the nurse handles a 4 p.m. med pass when two residents fall at once. The LPN screening questions test that judgment, and the interview guide for nurses covers the director of nursing's round.

Questions people ask

Should an LPN search include LVN?

Yes. California and Texas license vocational nurses under the LVN title, and many nurses who trained or worked there keep that title on their profiles. Put "licensed practical nurse," "licensed vocational nurse," LPN and LVN in the same OR block, and add the state name when the client is in one of those states.

Does the Nurse Licensure Compact cover LPNs?

Yes. The compact text, as enacted in states such as Virginia, covers both registered nurses and licensed practical or vocational nurses. NCSBN's compact site lists 43 participating jurisdictions as of October 2026. A nurse whose home state is not a member needs a separate license in the client's state. This is not legal advice.

What exam does an LPN pass?

Practical and vocational nurses pass the NCLEX-PN, developed by NCSBN. The Next Generation NCLEX, with case-study items that measure clinical judgment, launched on April 1, 2023, so newer profiles may mention NGN.

How do I keep RNs out of an LPN search?

Exclude "registered nurse," BSN and "LPN to RN" with NOT when the client wants a career LPN, and require LPN-setting words such as "med pass" or "long-term care." Many RNs started as LPNs and still list the title in their history.
