Fathom is a free AI notetaker that records, transcribes and summarizes Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Slack Huddles calls, joining as a bot on any computer and capturing without a bot on a Mac, with unlimited free recordings and paid plans from $15 a user a month billed yearly as of October 2026. Interview Signal is a desktop app for Windows and Mac built only for interviews: no bot on either system, a question guide during the call, and a scorecard with the candidate's quotes plus a client submittal afterward. Neither integrates with an applicant tracking system. Choose Fathom if you want a free, searchable video record of your interviews; choose Interview Signal if you want the interview itself structured and a write-up you can send, especially on Windows.

We make Interview Signal. Every fact about Fathom below comes from Fathom's own site, checked in October 2026 and linked. For a longer look at Fathom in hiring, including prompts for its AI, see Fathom for recruiting.

How do Interview Signal and Fathom compare at a glance?

Fathom cells link to their source. "Not described" means we did not find it on Fathom's pages; ask Fathom before ruling it out.

Does Fathom join the call as a bot?

On Windows, yes. Fathom's bot-free guide says "bot-free is currently Mac-only", and its What's new page lists the Windows desktop app and bot-free capture under "Coming soon". On a PC today, the Fathom bot joins Zoom, Meet or Teams as a participant, and a client-hosted meeting may hold it in a waiting room.

On a Mac, Fathom gives you a real choice. Bot-free capture is "Now live on Mac" and records audio from the host's device, while bot-free video is "currently in a limited beta". The bot remains useful for one thing a device-based tool cannot do: recording a meeting you are not attending.

Interview Signal never joins the call on either operating system. It runs on Windows 10/11 or macOS 13 or newer, labels the microphone as the interviewer and the meeting's sound as the candidate, and has no bot option. If most of your team is on Windows and the bot is the problem, that is the clearest difference on this page.

Which one handles phone screens?

Fathom's pages describe Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Slack Huddles, and do not mention phone calls. Its What's new page says "The Fathom iOS app is almost here". Until Fathom documents phone capture, test a softphone call yourself before relying on it. (The bot-free guide describes the coming iOS app for in-person meetings, not phone calls.)

Interview Signal captures a phone screen the same way as a video call, provided the call runs through the computer's audio, such as a softphone. It has no mobile app, so a call on your handset is out of reach. Our guide to recording a phone screen covers setups that work.

What do you get during the interview, and after it?

Fathom is strongest after the call. Its pricing page lists instant AI summaries, more than 15 meeting templates, AI action items, Ask Fathom for questions about a call, and clips and playlists. Clips are a genuine advantage for hiring: a two-minute video of a candidate's answer can say more to a hiring manager than a paragraph. We did not find a scorecard, a question guide from the job description, or a client submittal on Fathom's pages, and its sales-oriented templates (BANT, Sandler) show who it was built for.

Interview Signal works during the call. It builds a question guide from the job description, pins must-ask questions until you ask them, suggests follow-ups with a reason (probe, clarify or evidence), fills the scorecard as you go, and scores on demand when you press Evaluate, with an optional second model (Dual AI). A private answer check flags answers that read as AI-written or read aloud and suggests a question to try; it never changes a score or reaches the submittal. Afterward, each score carries the candidate's quotes, checked against the transcript, and a quote that is not in the transcript is removed. That is the evidence-based feedback method built into the tool.

If your debrief runs on video highlights and a summary, Fathom maps to it directly. If it runs on a scorecard or a client submittal, you would be building that by hand from a Fathom transcript.

Where does the interview data go?

Fathom is a cloud service. Its product page says Fathom is "SOC 2 Type II audited, HIPAA compliant, and GDPR-aligned, with SSO and SCIM available on team plans." We did not find a storage region stated on the pages we checked.

Interview Signal keeps transcripts, quotes, candidate names, notes and submittals on the recruiter's computer. Audio goes to a speech-to-text provider in short chunks during the call and is not retained, and our server keeps only counts and durations (security details). The flip side: there is no shared library of recordings for a hiring team to browse, which Fathom's playlists and search provide.

Which one connects to your ATS?

Neither, as of October 2026. Fathom's integrations page lists HubSpot, Salesforce, Slack, Asana, Notion, Zapier, Make, a public API and MCP, and AI assistants, but no applicant tracking system. A Zapier or API workflow could carry notes into an ATS; that is something you would build.

Interview Signal has no ATS integration either. It exports by copy, Markdown, Word, a CSV row, email or Slack, and shapes notes for Bullhorn, Greenhouse, Lever or JobAdder so the paste lands in the right fields. Either way the last step is yours.

How much does each one cost?

Fathom prices are from its pricing page and Interview Signal prices from ours, as of October 2026. Totals are our arithmetic.

Fathom is cheaper at every level, and its free plan is in a different league from Interview Signal's 20 minutes. The price gap pays for interview-specific work: the live guide, the quote-checked scorecard, the submittal and local storage. If a summary and a video are enough for your process, Fathom is the better deal.

Should you choose Fathom or Interview Signal?

Choose Fathom if:

  • You want unlimited free recordings and a summary of every interview.
  • Video clips of candidate answers help your hiring managers decide.
  • You are on a Mac and want the option of bot-free capture, or you need a bot for meetings you miss.
  • You also use it for sales or internal meetings and want one tool.

Choose Interview Signal if:

  • You are on Windows and do not want a bot in the call.
  • You want must-ask questions, follow-ups and a scorecard in front of you during the interview.
  • Your output is a scorecard or client submittal with quotes you can defend.
  • You accept the trade-offs: no ATS integration, no video, desktop only, and a newer product with few public reviews.

Best for, in one line: Fathom is best for hiring managers who want a free, shareable record of their interviews; Interview Signal is best for recruiters who want structured, evidence-backed output from each interview.

What should you test before you decide?

1. Run one interview on your usual computer. On Windows, note how
the Fathom bot appears to the candidate.
2. Run one phone screen through each tool, if phone screens are
   part of your week.
3. Hand a hiring manager a Fathom clip and summary, and an
Interview Signal scorecard, for the same candidate. Which one
   do they act on?
4. Decide how notes will reach your ATS with each tool.
5. Count your real interview hours before comparing plans.

Interview Signal's 20 free minutes cover one real screen, and the walkthrough video shows the whole flow first. Hiring managers new to note-taking may find our guide to taking interview notes useful whichever tool they pick, and candidates should always be told a note-taker is running; see the consent script.

Questions people ask

Is Fathom or Interview Signal better for job interviews?

It depends on what you need from the call. Fathom is a free general notetaker with unlimited recordings, video and shareable clips, as of October 2026. Interview Signal is built only for interviews, with a question guide during the call and a scorecard and client submittal afterward, but it costs more and does not record video.

Can Fathom record an interview without a bot on Windows?

Not yet. As of October 2026 Fathom's What's new page says bot-free capture is live on Mac and lists Windows under coming soon, so on a Windows PC the Fathom bot joins the call. Interview Signal runs without a bot on both Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer.

Is Fathom really free?

Fathom's Free plan is described as free forever with unlimited recordings and transcriptions and instant AI summaries, as of October 2026, with some AI features marked as limited use. Interview Signal's free tier is 20 minutes of transcription in total, so for ongoing free use Fathom is far more generous.

Does Fathom or Interview Signal integrate with an ATS?

Neither names an applicant tracking system integration. Fathom's integrations page lists HubSpot, Salesforce, Slack, Notion, Asana, Zapier and Make among others, and Interview Signal has no ATS integration at all; both leave you copying notes into the ATS or, with Fathom, building a Zapier workflow.
