AI tools for phone screens, as of October 2026, take one of two approaches. AI voice interviewers, such as Tenzo, Alex (formerly Apriora), HeyMilo and Ribbon, run the first-round screen themselves and hand the recruiter a transcript, score or summary. Recruiter-side tools, such as CoRecruit, Metaview, phone systems with AI summaries like Dialpad, and Interview Signal, help a human recruiter run the call and write it up. Volume decides most of it: AI interviewers suit hundreds of applicants for similar roles, while recruiter-side tools suit screens where the conversation itself sells the job.

We make Interview Signal, one of the tools below; everything about the other products comes from their own sites, linked and dated. If you are looking for questions rather than software, start with our phone screen questions for recruiters.

Which AI voice interviewers can run a phone screen?

Tenzo

Tenzo's AI recruiter screens, interviews and schedules candidates 24/7 in 40+ languages, over phone calls, WhatsApp, video or email. It says a de-biasing layer removes protected-class information from transcripts before evaluation, and that candidates can opt out of AI interviews and request accommodations (Tenzo). Pricing is scoped to your volume. Best for: multilingual high-volume hiring.

Alex

Alex, whose site footer reads "Apriora Inc. dba Alex," calls candidates by phone and also screens over video, SMS and WhatsApp in 30 languages. It adds fraud checks: a risk score per application, a government ID compared with a live selfie, and a proctor that monitors interviews in real time (Alex). Best for: employers and staffing firms that also worry about fake applicants.

HeyMilo

HeyMilo runs automated phone screens or scored video interviews 24/7 in 20+ languages, produces a scored report with a rationale per question, syncs transcripts to the ATS, and names Bullhorn, Avionté and JobDiva among its integrations. It says it runs third-party bias audit checks (HeyMilo). Best for: staffing agencies screening at volume.

Ribbon and the Fireflies voice agent

Ribbon runs structured voice screening in the browser with scoring and ranking, displays a New York City Local Law 144 bias audit last done in 2025, and publishes prices: Growth is $499 a month billed annually for 100 interviews, with a 7-day trial (Ribbon pricing). Fireflies' AI voice agent is link-based, so candidates click and start talking with no app; it includes 50 free minutes and then starts at $0.06 per minute (Fireflies). Best for: teams that want to try an AI screen at a known cost. Note: neither describes a candidate dialling a phone number, so check that if your candidates are not at a computer.

Which tools help a recruiter run the phone screen?

  • CoRecruit includes VoIP calling with unlimited US and Canada minutes and mobile apps, then drafts notes and client-ready submittals (CoRecruit). Best for: agency recruiters who want to dial from the tool itself.
  • Metaview asks you to register your outbound number once, then call candidates from its phonebook through the browser or your own phone, which Metaview rings first; a switchboard is still available (Metaview). Best for: teams that want phone and video interview notes in the same system.
  • Dialpad offers real-time transcripts and AI Recaps, and its Bullhorn integration logs a transcript link on the record (Dialpad). Best for: teams that are changing phone systems anyway. We compare phone systems in call recording apps for recruiters.
  • Interview Signal captures a phone screen that runs through your computer, with no bot, and shows a live transcript, a question guide built from the job description with must-ask questions pinned, and suggested follow-ups. Afterwards you get a scorecard with the candidate's quotes and a submittal in your template. Best for: recruiters who want help during the call, not only notes after it. Weak spots: calls on a mobile that is not linked to the computer are not captured, there is no ATS integration, and it is desktop only.

What will the candidate experience?

With an AI interviewer, the candidate talks to a voice agent, often within minutes of applying, at any hour. Some candidates like the speed; others want a person. Say plainly that the screen is run by AI, what it assesses and how to ask for a human instead; our AI disclosure template has wording. With a recruiter-side tool, the candidate talks to you, and the only change is a consent line at the start, because the call is being transcribed.

What rules apply to AI phone screens?

If an AI tool scores, ranks or filters candidates, AI hiring rules may apply on top of call recording law. In New York City, Local Law 144 requires an automated employment decision tool to have had a bias audit within one year of its use, a public summary of the results, and notice to candidates 10 business days before use (NYC DCWP, checked October 2026). Our Local Law 144 bias audit guide explains what to ask a vendor for. This is not legal advice.

How to pilot an AI tool for phone screens

  1. Pick one requisition with plenty of applicants and clear must-haves.
  2. Write the screen first: knock-out questions, two or three experience questions, logistics. Our phone screen template is a starting point.
  3. Run the tool for two weeks next to your current process.
  4. Compare outcomes. As an example only: if 40 candidates pass the AI screen and recruiters would have advanced 30 of them, review the 10 disagreements one by one.
  5. Ask ten candidates how the screen felt, including those who did not advance.

If the goal is simply more screens per recruiter per day, look at the workflow first; our guide to screening more candidates per day finds time before you buy anything.

Questions people ask

Can AI do phone screens with candidates?

Yes. As of October 2026, AI voice interviewers such as Tenzo, Alex (formerly Apriora), HeyMilo and Ribbon run first-round screens on their own, around the clock and in several languages, and return transcripts, scores or summaries to the recruiter. They suit high-volume roles with clear requirements better than specialist roles where the first call is also a sales conversation.

What is the best AI tool to help recruiters on phone screens?

It depends on your phone setup. As of October 2026, CoRecruit includes built-in calling plus notes and submittals, Metaview lets you dial candidates from its phonebook so the call is captured, phone systems such as Dialpad add AI call summaries, and Interview Signal gives a live question guide and scorecard for screens that run through your computer.

How much do AI phone screening tools cost?

Most do not publish prices. As of October 2026, Ribbon publishes plans from $499 a month billed annually for 100 interviews, Fireflies' AI voice agent starts at $0.06 per minute after 50 free minutes, and Interview Signal, which helps a human recruiter rather than replacing one, starts at $9 for an hour of transcription. Tenzo, Alex and HeyMilo quote by volume.

Do I have to tell candidates an AI is screening them?

You should, and in some places you must. New York City's Local Law 144, for example, requires notice to candidates before using an automated employment decision tool, along with a bias audit. Tell candidates up front, offer a human alternative, and check the rules where you hire. This is not legal advice.
