Interview Signal for hiring managers: run the interview, keep the evidence
On this page
Interview Signal is a desktop app for the person running the interview, and that includes the hiring manager who will manage the hire. You build or reuse a role's kit, interview beside Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet with no bot joining, and listen while the app transcribes, keeps must-ask questions in view, suggests follow-ups and fills a scorecard with the candidate's own words. Afterwards you have evidence for the debrief rather than half-remembered notes. As of October 2026 a hiring manager on their own fits Free (20 minutes), Pay as you go hours or Solo; one whose recruiting team is on Team takes a seat there.
How does a hiring manager use Interview Signal, step by step?
- Get the kit. If your recruiters are on a Team plan and have saved the role, it is already on your home screen. Otherwise press "New role", paste the job description, and choose an "Interview type": "Technical", "Coding", "System design", "Behavioural", "HR screen" or "Balanced". "Difficulty" runs from "Easy" (junior) to "Expert" (staff and above), or "Mixed", which rises through the interview so a weak candidate shows early. See the kit from a job description.
- Prepare. On the pre-interview screen, type the candidate's name, attach the CV so follow-ups can probe what it claims (see CV attach), choose "Video call", "Phone" or "In person", and run the audio check.
- Interview and listen. The guide ticks questions off as you ask them; click one and "Pin" it to focus the follow-ups and the scoring on it, with a clock against its planned time. "+ Add" puts in your own question, or three suggested in a category you pick.
- Add your own judgment. Press + on any scorecard area to add your own score or note, and type free notes at the bottom of the scorecard. Your score is marked as yours, and the model's reading is kept underneath.
- End and debrief. "End interview" opens the review screen with the scorecard and a written summary. "Copy for Slack" gives one short paragraph for the hiring channel, "Copy next round" lists what the next interviewer still has to cover, and Compare puts up to six scored candidates for the role side by side.
Which features help a hiring manager most?
| Feature | What it does for you |
|---|---|
| Must-ask questions | Up to five questions stay pinned at the top of the guide until they have been asked, so the one thing the decision turns on is not left out. |
| Follow-ups | Suggestions tagged probe, clarify or evidence, each about something the candidate just said. "Ask this" moves one onto the guide, pinned. |
| Accuracy check | On technical, coding and design questions, the model marks the claims it can check in the transcript, green if they held up and red if not. A reading for you to judge, never a score. |
| Ask the AI | A private box under the follow-ups for your own question, such as whether a claim was correct. Never in the transcript or the write-up. |
| Verified quotes | Each score carries the candidate's words, checked against the transcript. A quote that is not there word for word is removed, and an area with no evidence is capped and marked "Probe further". |
| Answer check | A private flag when an answer reads as AI-written or read out, with a question to try. It never changes a score. |
| Dual AI | A second model's follow-ups and scores beside the first, for a second opinion on a hard call. |
Can I use it for in-person interviews and panels?
- In person. Choose "In person". Both voices reach the same microphone, so the app says speaker labels will not be reliable. The transcript works, but the scorecard needs your own scores, because quotes cannot be checked against the candidate's side. "Mute me" does not mute in person, because muting would stop the transcript and the scoring; the app points you to "Pause capture" for an aside. See in-person interviews.
- Panels. On the Team plan, several interviewers each run the app on their own computer and split one candidate's questions, and each guide shows what the others have marked as asked. Transcripts and scores are not shared. See panel interviews.
- During the call. "Mute me" (Ctrl+M) silences your microphone while the candidate is still transcribed and scored; the live controls guide covers the rest.
What stays private?
Transcripts, quotes, candidate names, notes and write-ups are stored on your computer and never uploaded to Interview Signal. Audio goes to a speech-to-text provider in short chunks during the call and is not retained; the CV, if attached, is sent to the AI model while the interview runs; the candidate's name and company are sent to the model when it writes the submittal. The server keeps counts and durations only. Nothing reaches your colleagues unless you copy or export it. See where your data is stored.
What does Interview Signal not do for a hiring manager?
- No ATS integration. Feedback is copied or exported and pasted into your ATS by hand; notes are shaped for Greenhouse, Lever, Bullhorn or JobAdder.
- Desktop only. Windows 10 or 11 and macOS 13 or newer; no phone app, so it cannot run from a mobile on the way into a meeting room.
- Phone interviews must run through the computer, so the app can hear the candidate.
- No video recording. It works from audio only.
- The AI readings are prompts, not verdicts. The accuracy and answer checks never change a score; you know the field, and the decision is yours.
- A newer product with few public reviews so far.
Which plan fits a hiring manager?
| Your situation | Plan | Price as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Trying it on one interview | Free | 20 minutes of transcription in total, no card |
| Interviewing now and then | Pay as you go | 1 hour $9, 5 hours $29, 15 hours $69; bought once, never expire |
| Interviewing most weeks | Solo | $49 a month, or $468 a year |
| Your recruiting team is on Team | A seat on their Team plan | $59 per seat per month, or $49 billed yearly; minimum three seats on the account |
Minutes are counted only while live transcription runs, so preparing a role or reading a scorecard uses none; see pay-as-you-go hours. The pricing page puts the break-even at about eleven hours of interviews a month, where Solo costs less than the 15-hour pack. To see a full interview first, watch the walkthrough on the Try it page, then download the app.
Questions people ask
Can a hiring manager use Interview Signal without a recruiter?
Yes. Interview Signal's pricing page says Free, Pay as you go and Solo are for one recruiter or hiring manager running their own interviews. A hiring manager can build roles from their own job descriptions, run the interviews and keep the scorecards on their own computer, with no recruiter or team plan involved.
Does Interview Signal work for in-person interviews?
Yes, with limits. Choose In person under How are you speaking? on the pre-interview screen. In a room both voices reach the same microphone, so the app warns that speaker labels will not be reliable. The transcript works, but quotes cannot be checked against the candidate's side, so press Evaluate and add your own scores with the + on each area. Mute me does not mute in person, because your microphone carries both voices; use Pause capture for an aside.
How much does Interview Signal cost for a hiring manager who interviews occasionally?
As of October 2026, every account starts with 20 free minutes of transcription and no card. After that, Pay as you go hours cost $9 for 1 hour, $29 for 5 hours or $69 for 15 hours, bought once and never expiring. Solo is $49 a month for someone who interviews most weeks.
Will the candidate know I am using Interview Signal?
Nothing joins the call: Interview Signal listens on your own computer, with no bot or extra participant in Zoom, Teams or Meet. You should still tell candidates where notice is required, and the app gives you a consent line to read at the start. Interview Signal is not legal advice.
