Mechanical engineer job description template: product, plant or building systems, the PE question and the work
On this page
"Mechanical engineer: design, analyze and test mechanical systems; SolidWorks required; PE a plus" fits a consumer product designer, a manufacturing engineer chasing scrap on a production line, an HVAC designer at a consulting firm and a test engineer running a thermal chamber. Those people rarely apply for each other's jobs, and the posting should make it easy to tell which one you need. A useful mechanical engineer job description names the seat, the products or systems, the stage of the work (concept, detail design, production, field), the tools, the PE requirement if there is one, and who the engineer hands work to. Below are the seat types, the licensure and classification lines with sources, a copy-ready template, screening and scorecard rows, and the mistakes that blur engineering postings together. For the first call, use mechanical engineer phone screen questions.
Name the seat first
| Seat | What the work looks like | Must-have that separates it |
|---|---|---|
| Product design engineer | Concept to detail design, CAD, tolerance analysis, prototypes, design reviews, release to manufacturing | Has taken a part or assembly from concept to production and handled the changes after launch |
| Manufacturing or process engineer | Line layout, fixtures, process capability, scrap and downtime, work instructions | Has improved a production process and measured the result on the floor |
| HVAC or building systems (MEP) engineer | Load calculations, equipment selection, ductwork and piping design, drawings for permits, construction support | Has designed systems to code; PE in the project state or on a clear path to it |
| Test and validation engineer | Test plans, fixtures, data acquisition, failure analysis, reports | Has written a test plan and found a failure mode before customers did |
| Thermal or analysis engineer | Simulation (FEA or CFD), hand calculations, correlation with test data | Has correlated a simulation to test results and explained the gap |
Then settle the facts: the products or buildings, the stage of the work, the codes or standards that apply, the CAD and analysis tools, how much time is on the shop floor or job site, travel, and who checks and signs the work.
Licensure and classification lines, with sources
Not legal advice. The points below were checked against the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, NCEES, the Texas Occupations Code and the Department of Labor as of October 2026. Engineering licensure and its exemptions are set by each state; confirm them with the state board.
When a PE matters. BLS says licensure is not required for entry-level mechanical engineers, that a PE can oversee other engineers, sign off on projects and provide services directly to the public, and that mechanical engineers who sell services to the public must be licensed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified August 27, 2026). Require the PE when the seat seals drawings or calculations, and name the state.
FE and PE exams. NCEES calls the FE exam generally the first step toward a PE license and designs it for recent graduates and students close to finishing an EAC/ABET-accredited degree (NCEES FE exam). The PE Mechanical exam is computer-based and given year-round, in HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, and Thermal and Fluid Systems versions (NCEES PE Mechanical). If you prefer a PE, name the version that matches the work.
In-house exemptions. Some states exempt certain engineering done by employees of private companies. Texas, for example, excludes a private business entity's activities, and those of its employees and personnel under its direct supervision, when they relate to reasonable modifications of its own facilities not accessible to the public or to research, development, design, fabrication, production or service of products the entity manufactures (Texas Occupations Code 1001.057). These exemptions are narrow and differ by state, so do not assume one applies outside your plant.
Exempt or nonexempt. Engineering is listed among the learned professions (29 CFR 541.301(c)), and the exemption requires a salary or fee basis at no less than the standard level, which the Department of Labor lists as $684 a week (DOL Fact Sheet 17D). Engineers doing engineering are commonly exempt; drafters and technicians are judged on their own duties.

Pay and EEO
Post the approved range and check pay transparency laws by state. BLS publishes pay data for mechanical engineers in the Handbook profile linked above; this page does not quote figures. Close with a short EEO statement and an accommodation contact, and state citizenship or export control requirements only when the work legally needs them.
From must-haves to screening questions and scorecard rows
| Must-have | Screening question | Scorecard competency | Evidence of a strong answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design ownership | "Pick a part or system you designed. What requirement drove the design, and what changed after the first build?" | Engineering judgment | Names the driving requirement, the trade-off and the change, with numbers |
| Analysis | "How did you check that a design would hold before testing it?" | Analytical rigor | Hand calculation or simulation, stated assumptions, a margin, and a test that confirmed it |
| Manufacturing or construction fit | "Tell me about feedback from the floor or a contractor that changed your design." | Design for manufacture or build | Listened, changed the design, and fed the lesson into the next one |
| Problem solving | "Describe a failure you investigated. How did you find the root cause?" | Root cause analysis | Data before opinions, a method, a verified fix |
| License (if the seat seals) | "Which states are you licensed in, which PE version did you pass, and have you sealed work like ours?" | Not scored: verified with the board | States, version and examples of sealed work |
To source, use Boolean search strings for mechanical engineers, and for the later rounds in plant settings, the interview guide for manufacturing roles. If the seat is site or infrastructure design, the civil engineer job description template is the closer starting point.
Common mistakes in mechanical engineer job descriptions
One posting for every seat
Product, manufacturing, HVAC and test engineers read different signals. Pick one and write the stage of work into the summary.
"PE a plus" with no reason
If no one seals anything, the PE line confuses candidates. If the seat does seal, make it a must-have with the state and version.
Software as the requirement
A CAD tool is a skill, not the job. Ask for the design work and accept similar tools.
Blanket citizenship lines
Only state citizenship or export control requirements the work actually triggers. Unneeded lines exclude lawful candidates and create risk.
No floor or site time
Engineers who expect a desk job leave when half the week is on the line or the roof. Say how much time is spent there.
Before you publish
- The seat, products or systems and stage of work are in the summary.
- The PE line appears only where work is sealed, with state and version.
- Tools are limited to the weekly ones, with similar tools accepted.
- Floor, site and travel time are stated, and classification has been reviewed.
- The pay range, EEO statement and accommodation contact close the posting.
Questions people ask
Does a mechanical engineer need a PE license?
It depends on the work. BLS says licensure is not required for entry-level mechanical engineers, while engineers who sell services to the public must be licensed. Building systems design at a consulting firm usually needs a PE in the project's state to seal drawings, while many product and manufacturing roles do not, because some states exempt certain in-house work. Require the PE only when the seat seals documents.
What is the PE Mechanical exam?
NCEES offers the PE Mechanical exam as a computer-based test year-round, in three versions: HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, and Thermal and Fluid Systems. If you require or prefer a PE, name the module that matches the work, since an HVAC designer and a machine designer took different exams.
Is a mechanical engineer exempt from overtime?
Engineering is listed as a learned profession in the federal regulation, so a mechanical engineer whose primary duty uses that advanced knowledge and who is paid a salary of at least the standard level, $684 a week as listed by the Department of Labor, is commonly exempt. Drafters and technicians in engineering teams are judged on their own duties. Check state law.
Should the posting list CAD software?
Name the one CAD and the one analysis tool the engineer will use every week, and say whether experience with a similar tool is acceptable. Most engineers move between CAD platforms in weeks; the design judgment behind the model is what is hard to hire.
