Cisco's AI Assistant is built into paid Webex plans, so a hiring team already on Webex can summarize interviews without buying another tool. As of October 2026 Webex lists it as included with Webex Meet ($144 per user per year), Webex Suite ($270) and Enterprise, but not with Webex Free. In a Webex meeting it gives catch-up summaries and action items during the call and a summary and transcript afterwards, saved to the host's account. It is off by default, only the host or cohosts can start it unless they change that, and participants get an audio and visual notice when it starts.

This page explains how to use it for interviews: what it produces, who controls it, what the candidate sees and can do, where the output goes, and where it falls short of an interview tool. Every product fact links to Webex's own pages, checked in October 2026.

What does Webex AI Assistant do during an interview?

According to Webex's help article on AI Assistant in meetings, the AI Assistant panel offers:

  • Catch me up: a summary of the last 15 minutes.
  • Summarize more: from the last 15 minutes or from the start.
  • Was my name mentioned: moments when someone said your name.
  • What are the action items: action items mentioned so far.
  • Ask AI Assistant: questions about the meeting; questions and answers are visible only to you and not saved after the meeting.

After the meeting, AI Assistant produces a post-meeting summary, with or without a recording, available in the meeting history. For an interviewer, the useful parts are the transcript and a summary to start feedback from. The panel options are built for people who missed part of a meeting, which in a one-to-one interview is rarely the problem.

Who can turn it on, and what does the candidate see?

The default meeting option is Only the host and cohosts can start and stop the summary. A participant who clicks AI Assistant is told to ask the host. The host can switch this to Anyone can start and stop the summary. When the summary starts, participants get an audio and visual notification that AI Assistant is active.

Webex's guide to enabling AI Assistant describes two ways it can start without anyone clicking during the interview:

  • With recording: a meeting option, Start recordings will also turn on AI Assistant.
  • At the start of a scheduled meeting: Automatically turn on AI Assistant when the meeting starts, set when scheduling in the Webex App or as a default in User Hub.

If either is on, the summary starts before you have asked the candidate anything. For interviews, we suggest leaving automatic start off and starting AI Assistant yourself once the candidate has agreed.

The explicit consent setting, and why it is awkward in interviews

Webex has an explicit consent option, off by default and enabled by administrators, that asks every participant to agree when recording, AI Assistant or transcripts start. A participant who does not consent is placed in a read-only mode: they can listen, but their audio and video are turned off, sharing is disabled and chat is off. Webex also says participants on older clients, standalone devices or dial-in keep the existing experience.

In a sales meeting, read-only mode is a reasonable fallback. In an interview it means a candidate who declines can no longer answer. So do not use the prompt as your consent process. Ask out loud first, and if the candidate says no, leave AI Assistant off and take notes by hand. Our interview recording consent script has wording, and is it legal to use AI note takers in interviews? covers the rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

Where do the summary and transcript go?

The help article says meeting summaries and transcripts are saved to the meeting host's account in the Webex App, and that if the meeting is tied to a space, links appear in that space. Hosts and cohosts choose what is kept after the meeting:

  • Save summary and transcript (the default)
  • Save summary only
  • Don't save summary and transcript

Three consequences for hiring:

  1. Make the interviewer the host or a cohost. If a coordinator schedules the meeting from their own account, the summary lands in theirs.
  2. Watch the space. A meeting linked to a busy team space posts links where everyone in it can see them. Interview notes often include salary and personal details.
  3. Choose what to keep deliberately. A transcript is the evidence behind a rating. If your policy is to keep it, copy what you need into the ATS and follow your retention rules.

On data handling, Webex's page on AI development, data privacy, security and safety says Cisco does not retain customer input data after inference, and that its model provider, Microsoft, represents it will not use customer content to improve Azure OpenAI models or store Cisco customer data. Feature-specific retention is on Cisco's Trust Portal. For the wider questions to ask, see where AI note takers store interview data.

Which languages does it handle?

The help article says AI Assistant supports 15 spoken languages without a Real-time Translation license, and 120+ caption languages with one. Webex's pricing page lists Real-Time Translation as an add-on at $300 per license per year. Set the spoken language at the start of the interview, or change it under Meeting options, because AI Assistant uses that setting for the post-meeting summary and transcript.

Can it summarize phone screens?

For calls in the Webex App, yes. Webex's article on in-call summaries describes the same panel on calls: catch me up, summarize from the start, action items. Summarization and transcription start immediately; you see a private visual notification, and everyone else on the call hears an audio notification. The summary, transcript and action items then appear in your call history. Webex Suite is the plan that adds a business phone number and calling to any telephone number, so check with your administrator whether your phone screens run through Webex Calling.

Which Webex plans include AI Assistant?

From the US Webex pricing page, as of October 2026:

PlanPriceAI AssistantWhat else matters for interviews
Webex Free$0Not listedMeetings up to 40 minutes, local recording
Webex Meet$144 per user per year ($12 a month)IncludedMeetings up to 24 hours, 10 GB AI-powered cloud recording, closed captions
Webex Suite (Meet + Call)$270 per user per year ($22.50 a month)IncludedBusiness phone number, calls to any telephone number
Webex EnterpriseContact salesIncludedUp to 1,000 attendees, unlimited cloud recording

The help article adds that the meeting summary feature is only available on the Webex Suite meeting platform, and that an administrator may need to enable it. If you do not see the button, ask IT before assuming your plan lacks it.

Where does Webex AI Assistant fall short for interviews?

  • It covers Webex only. The help articles describe Webex meetings and Webex App calls. Candidates and clients who send Zoom or Teams links need another tool; see AI note takers for Teams interviews.
  • Meeting summaries, not interview notes. Nothing in the articles describes a question guide, a scorecard tied to job criteria or an ATS sync. You map the transcript to your competencies yourself, ideally on an interview scorecard.
  • The host owns the output. Panel members who are not hosts depend on the host sharing it.
  • Consent tooling built for meetings. As above, read-only mode does not fit a candidate who declines.

How should an interviewer use it?

  1. Schedule the interview from your own account, so you are the host and the summary lands with you.
  2. Turn off automatic start for candidate meetings.
  3. Mention in the invite that you may use Webex's AI Assistant for notes, and that the candidate can say no.
  4. Ask again at the start. Start AI Assistant only after a clear yes.
  5. Ask your questions from a written guide, not from the panel's suggestions.
  6. After the call, open the transcript, copy one quote per competency into your scorecard, and rate it yourself.
  7. Decide whether to keep the transcript, according to your retention policy.

How does it compare with other built-in assistants?

Built-in assistants share the same strength and the same limit: no extra purchase, but they work only inside their own platform and produce meeting summaries rather than interview evidence. Zoom's equivalent is covered in our comparison with Zoom AI Companion. We make Interview Signal, a desktop app with no bot for interviews on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and phone screens taken through the computer; Webex is not among the platforms it lists, and it has no ATS integration. Everything about Webex on this page comes from Cisco's own pages, linked and dated. For a team that interviews only on Webex, AI Assistant is the obvious first thing to try.

Questions people ask

Is Webex AI Assistant free?

It is included in paid Webex plans rather than sold separately. As of October 2026 Webex's US pricing page shows AI Assistant included with Webex Meet ($144 per user per year, or $12 a month), Webex Suite ($270 per user per year) and Webex Enterprise, and does not list it on Webex Free, which limits meetings to 40 minutes.

Can a candidate refuse Webex AI Assistant in an interview?

They can ask, but by default only the host or cohosts can start and stop the summary. If an administrator has turned on Webex's explicit consent setting, a participant who declines is placed in a listen-only mode with audio, video and chat turned off, which would end a candidate's ability to answer. In practice the interviewer should ask before starting AI Assistant and leave it off if the candidate says no.

Where are Webex AI Assistant interview summaries saved?

Webex's help center says meeting summaries and transcripts are saved to the meeting host's account in the Webex App, and linked in the meeting's space if it has one. Hosts can choose to save the summary and transcript, the summary only, or neither, as of October 2026.

Does Webex AI Assistant work for phone interviews?

For calls made or answered in the Webex App, Webex's help center describes in-call AI Assistant summaries, action items and a transcript in your call history. Everyone else on the call hears an audio notification when it starts. Webex Suite, which adds a business phone number, is the plan that includes calling.
