Interview Signal exports: Word, Markdown, CSV, email, Slack and ATS notes
On this page
Interview Signal's exports sit in one row under the submittal on the review screen: "Copy", "Save .md", "Export .docx", "Add CSV row", "Email to client", "Copy for Slack", "Copy next round" and "Copy ATS note…" (Bullhorn, Greenhouse, Lever or JobAdder). Every one leaves through your own tools, your clipboard, your files or your mail app; the app has no ATS integration and never sends email itself. This describes version 0.9.10, current as of October 2026.
Which exports are there?
| Button | What you get | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Copy | The whole submittal as it is in the editor | Clipboard |
| Save .md | The submittal as a Markdown file | submittal.md in the interview's folder |
| Export .docx | The submittal as a Word document | The interview's folder, named after candidate and role |
| Add CSV row | One row of facts about this candidate | submittals.csv in your interviews folder |
| Email to client | A draft with a short covering note | Your own mail app |
| Copy for Slack | A few lines sized for a chat window | Clipboard |
| Copy next round | What a second interview still has to cover | Clipboard |
| Copy ATS note… | A note shaped for Bullhorn, Greenhouse, Lever or JobAdder | Clipboard, to paste into the ATS |
| Save transcript as .md | The transcript, with Interviewer and Candidate labels | transcript.md in the interview's folder |
The last one is in the side panel, under the transcript. Every export uses the submittal exactly as it is in the editor at that moment, so edit first and export second. How the document itself is written is covered in the client submittal guide.
How do I get a Word document to attach?
- Finish editing the submittal on the review screen.
- Press "Export .docx". The message "Word document saved. Show files to attach it." appears.
- Press "Show files" in that message (or at the top right of the screen) to open the interview's folder, and attach the file to your email.
The Word file keeps the headings, bold and italic text, bullet and numbered lists, tables (including the scorecard table) and dividing lines, in Calibri. Quoted lines come out indented in italics. The file name is the candidate and role, for example jane-doe-senior-backend-engineer.docx (example).
What does "Email to client" open?
A new draft in your default mail app, with the To line empty for you to fill in. The subject is the candidate and the role. The body is a short covering note, not the whole submittal: who you interviewed, for which role, how long and when; the recommendation (or the fit score); the first paragraph of the submittal; availability and compensation if they are in it; then "Full write-up attached. Happy to set up a call whenever suits." and the email address you sign in with, which you can replace with your signature.
The body is kept short because mail apps cut long links off. If the note may be too long, the full document is also put on your clipboard. If no mail app opens, the app copies the document to the clipboard and says so. Nothing is sent until you press send.
What is in the CSV row?
"Add CSV row" appends one line to submittals.csv in your interviews folder, so every candidate you export builds one spreadsheet. The columns are Date, Candidate, Role, Interviewer, Source, Length (min), Fit, Questions covered, Must-asks covered, Availability, Compensation, Recommendation, Strengths and Risks. Strengths lists the areas scored 7 or more; Risks lists areas scored 5 or less, or flagged to probe. A cell that starts with =, +, - or @ is prefixed so Excel or Google Sheets do not run it as a formula.
How do the ATS notes work?
Choose one from "Copy ATS note…", then paste it into the candidate's note field in your ATS:
- Bullhorn note: an "Interview — role — date" line, the fit and recommendation, the summary paragraph, then availability and compensation.
- Greenhouse scorecard note: an "Overall" line with the recommendation and fit, then each scored area as "area: score/10 — assessment" with its first quote.
- Lever note: the summary, then "Strengths:" and "Risks:" lines built from the area assessments.
- JobAdder note: candidate and role, who interviewed and when, the fit, the summary, then availability and "Rate/salary".
This is copy and paste, not an integration; nothing is written into the ATS for you. More on the trade-off in how to write candidate notes in your ATS.
What are "Copy for Slack" and "Copy next round" for?
"Copy for Slack" gives a colleague the gist on a phone: candidate and role, the recommendation and fit, "Strong on:" and "Watch:" (the first two points under the submittal's Strengths and Risks), availability, and a line saying the evidence is in the submittal. It has no headings, so it pastes cleanly into any chat.
"Copy next round" lists what a follow-up interview still has to establish, under "Not asked, and needed before this goes to a client:" (must-asks not covered), "Not asked:", "Answered, but without evidence to stand on:" (areas capped for lack of quotes, with "press for a specific example") and "Never reached:". If nothing is left, it says every question was asked and every area has evidence.
Does exporting change anything else?
Copy, Save .md, Export .docx, Add CSV row, Email to client and an ATS note mark the interview as "Sent" on the home screen. Copy for Slack, Copy next round and the transcript do not. Exporting also sends Interview Signal the interview's counts and durations and which kinds of export you used, never the content; see where your data is stored.
Limits
- No ATS integration: notes and rows are pasted by hand.
- The email draft carries a covering note; you attach the Word file yourself.
- The recommendation, availability and compensation in the CSV row, the ATS notes and the email come from the submittal's own "Recommendation", "Available" and "Compensation" lines. If your template words them differently, those fields may come out blank.
- To compare several candidates, use "Copy as text" on Compare.
Questions people ask
Can Interview Signal export an interview write-up to Word?
Yes. On the review screen, Export .docx saves the submittal as a Word document named after the candidate and the role, in that interview's folder on your computer. Headings, bold and italic text, bullet lists and the scorecard table come across, and Show files opens the folder so you can attach it.
Does Interview Signal integrate with Bullhorn or Greenhouse?
No. Interview Signal has no ATS integration and writes nothing into an applicant tracking system. It copies a note shaped for Bullhorn, Greenhouse, Lever or JobAdder to your clipboard, and you paste it into the candidate record yourself. It can also add a row to a CSV file you can paste from.
Does Interview Signal send emails to clients for me?
No. Email to client opens a new draft in your own mail app with the subject and a short covering note filled in and the To line empty. You add the address, attach the Word file, and nothing is sent until you press send yourself.
Where does Interview Signal save exported files?
Next to the interview they came from, in that interview's folder on your computer: submittal.md, the Word document and transcript.md. CSV rows go into one file, submittals.csv, in your interviews folder. Show files on the review screen and Open the folder in Settings take you there.
