Interview Signal for technical interviews: kits, claim checks and answers mid-call
On this page
For a technical interview, Interview Signal builds a kit of Technical, Coding or System design questions from the job description, each with a note on what a strong answer contains, written so a non-specialist can recognize one. During the call, its accuracy check marks the candidate's technical claims green or red in the transcript with a one-line reason, and "Ask the AI" answers your own questions, such as what the right answer is. Neither changes a score or reaches the submittal, which is written in the built-in "Technical" template. The app hears the conversation only: it does not see a shared editor or screen. This describes version 0.9.10, current as of October 2026.
How do I set up a technical interview kit?
- Press "New role", paste the job description or its link, and put what the hiring manager really needs in "What the client actually wants".
- Choose the "Interview type" from the table below, and a "Difficulty".
- Set "Submittal template" to "Technical", press "Generate the kit", edit, and press "Save role".
| Interview type | Hint in the app | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Technical | "Depth in the craft. What they have built, and what went wrong in it." | Experience-based depth: systems they built or ran |
| Coding | "Problems with a right answer. Best when you can share an editor." | Problems the candidate talks through; each comes with what a working approach contains, for an interviewer who cannot judge the code itself |
| System design | "Architecture, trade-offs and scale. Answers are discussions, not facts." | Senior rounds, where the note describes the shape of a strong answer rather than a correct one |
| Balanced | "Background, capability and logistics in the usual proportions." | A recruiter screen that has to end in a submittal |
The three technical types are single-type kits: off-type questions, including notice period, compensation and right to work, are removed, and the app tells you how many. To keep a logistics question, tick "Keep" on it before switching type; the button then reads, for example, "Regenerate the rest (2 kept)". "Difficulty" sets the bar an answer must clear: "Easy" (junior), "Medium" (mid-level), "Hard" (senior), "Expert" (staff and above) or "Mixed", which rises through the interview so a weak candidate shows early. The kit guide covers editing.
What helps me during a technical interview?
| Feature | What it does | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| "Pin" | Click a question in the guide and press "Pin": follow-ups and scoring focus on it, and a clock runs against its planned time | Required: with nothing pinned, the app works from your most recent question |
| Accuracy check | When the pinned question is Technical, Coding or System design (or nothing is pinned and the answer makes factual claims), up to six claims from the latest answer are marked green or red in the transcript, with "Holds up", "Partly right" or "Does not hold up" above the follow-ups | A score, or proof of competence; it changes no score |
| Ask the AI | A box under the follow-ups for your own question: the right answer, whether a claim was correct, how to phrase a probe | Verified against the transcript, so treat it as a quick reference; it is not saved |
| "+ Add" and "Suggest 3" | Pick a category such as System design, type a topic, and get three questions not already on the guide | A change to the saved role; added questions belong to this interview |
| Dual AI | A second model's follow-ups and scores beside the first, for a hard call | Used by the accuracy check or Ask the AI, which use the first model only |
| Answer check | "Flag answers that may be AI-generated": a private card when an answer reads as AI-written or read out, with a question to try | A score or a submittal line |
The accuracy check and the answer check are switched on or off under "AI" in the top bar ("Check technical answers" and "Flag answers that may be AI-generated"). A good pattern for a red mark: rest the pointer on it to read the reason, ask the candidate to walk you through how that worked in practice, type the claim into Ask the AI if you want a second reading, then decide yourself.
How are technical answers scored?
Against the kit's rubric, from what the candidate said. Each score carries the candidate's own quotes, every quote is checked against the transcript, and an area with no verified quote cannot score above 5 and is marked "Probe further". For coding and design questions that means the spoken explanation is the evidence: a candidate who solves a problem silently in an editor leaves the scorecard little to quote. Press "Evaluate" after a long answer, or leave "Score as we go" on. See the scorecard with verified quotes.
What does the write-up look like?
The "Technical" template has "Technical summary", "Depth by area" (the scorecard table, filled in by the app), "Strengths", "Gaps and risks", "Environment and tooling", "Compensation and notice" and "Evidence from the interview". Anything the interview did not reach is written as "Not discussed." For the next round, "Copy next round" lists the questions not asked, the areas answered without evidence ("press for a specific example") and the areas never reached, which is a ready brief for the engineer who interviews next. Templates are covered in submittal templates.
What does Interview Signal not do in a technical interview?
- It does not see code. No screen, editor or whiteboard is captured, no code is run, and there is no video recording.
- The accuracy check can be wrong, especially on niche or very recent technology, and it depends on the transcript: a misheard technical term means the quote does not match and nothing is marked.
- A whiteboard session in a room puts both voices on one microphone, labeled as you, so quotes cannot be verified, scores above 5 are capped, and follow-ups and "Score as we go" wait for you: press "Evaluate", add your own scores with "+", and use the refresh arrow for follow-ups. See in-person interviews.
- No ATS integration, desktop only (Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or newer), and phone interviews must run through the computer.
- It needs a connection and, on Free or Pay as you go, minutes left; see pricing.
Which plan fits technical interviewing?
As of October 2026: Free gives 20 minutes with no card; Pay as you go hours cost $9 for 1 hour, $29 for 5 or $69 for 15 and never expire; Solo is $49 a month for someone interviewing most weeks; Team is $59 per seat per month (or $49 billed yearly, minimum three seats) for a team sharing roles, kits and panels. Agency desks screening developers for clients should also read Interview Signal for IT staffing; recruiters new to the field, interviewing for technical roles as a non-technical recruiter; and for other tools, the best AI tools for technical recruiters.
Questions people ask
Can an AI interview tool tell me if a candidate's technical answer is right?
Interview Signal gives the AI model's reading, not a verdict. On technical, coding and system design questions, its accuracy check picks out up to six claims from the latest answer, confirms each quoted phrase is really in what the candidate said, and marks it green if it held up or red if it did not, with a one-line reason. It never changes a score and never goes into the submittal.
Does Interview Signal see the code in a coding interview?
No. Interview Signal captures audio only, the interviewer's microphone and the computer's sound, so it hears the conversation but not a shared editor, whiteboard or screen. Ask the candidate to talk through their approach, because what they say is what gets transcribed, checked and quoted.
Which interview type should I choose in Interview Signal for a technical screen?
Technical, Coding or System design give a kit of only that kind of question, which suits a dedicated technical round. They leave out notice period, compensation and right-to-work questions, so for a recruiter screen that must end in a client submittal, choose Balanced, or tick Keep on those questions before regenerating as a single-type kit.
Can I ask the AI for the right answer during a technical interview?
Yes. Interview Signal's live screen has an Ask the AI box under the follow-ups where you type a question such as what a good answer about database indexing should include, and a few plain sentences come back. The answer is shown only to you and is not saved, written into the transcript or put in the submittal.
