The main Read AI alternatives for recruiters as of October 2026 are Granola and Fathom for meeting notes without candidate analytics, Otter for inexpensive transcripts, Greenhouse Notetaker for Greenhouse customers, Metaview and BrightHire for recruiting-specific notes in an applicant tracking system, and Interview Signal for evidence-backed scorecards without a bot. The usual reason to switch is Read's meeting analytics: its recruiting page describes measuring the candidate's engagement and sentiment, which many hiring teams do not want anywhere near a decision.

We make Interview Signal, one of the tools below; everything about the other products comes from their own sites, linked and dated.

What does Read AI do well?

Read gives you three ways in: its Read Assistant joins Zoom, Teams or Google Meet as a participant (Read AI help), a botless Google Meet integration built on Google's Meet Media API (Read AI, March 2026), and a desktop app for 64-bit Windows 10/11 and macOS 14 or later that records without a bot and can capture dialer software calls (Read AI help). It can email external invitees in advance with an opt-out (Read AI help), and says contributing to model improvement is off by default (Read AI privacy). Our Read AI for interviews guide covers the settings.

Why do recruiters look for a Read AI alternative?

  • It measures the candidate. Read's recruiting page says it "measures the moments and topics that increased engagement, or decreased sentiment for the candidate" and sends a report on how the candidate and interviewers are doing (Read AI recruiting). Its transcripts are augmented with listener sentiment and engagement (Read AI pricing).
  • The free plan is small. Five meeting transcripts a month, each up to an hour (Read AI pricing).
  • No ATS. Read's integrations include HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion, Slack, Zapier and webhooks, with no applicant tracking system named.
  • Phones. Read's mobile apps do not record phone calls (Read AI help).
  • One plan per workspace. Everyone in a workspace must be on the same plan, so a hiring team cannot mix a few recruiter seats with cheaper ones (Read AI pricing).

Which note takers judge candidates, and which only record them?

This is the question to ask every vendor, not only Read. Based on each vendor's own pages as of October 2026:

ToolCandidate analytics the vendor describesWhat to do
Read AIEngagement and sentiment for the candidateSwitch off for candidate calls, or choose another tool
OtterSentiment analysis in the Recruiting Agent (Otter)Use transcripts and summaries; leave sentiment out of decisions
FirefliesCandidate Sentiment Analyzer and Culture Fit Extractor AI Skills (Fireflies)Do not enable these for hiring
Granola, FathomNone described for candidates; notes and summariesStandard notice and retention
Greenhouse NotetakerNotes drafted per scorecard question; interviewer writes the assessmentKeep the human rating
Interview SignalScores against your scorecard, filled as the interview goes, each carrying the candidate's quotes; a private check that flags answers reading as AI-written or read out, which never changes a scoreInterviewer reviews every score; evaluative AI may still bring rules into scope

Any tool that helps score candidates, ours included, can bring an interview into scope for laws such as New York City Local Law 144. Check with counsel before switching evaluative features on; this page is not legal advice. Our guide to using AI in recruiting responsibly covers the basics.

Each alternative, and who it suits

Granola

Granola uses your computer's audio with no bot and fills out the notes you type (Granola). Best for: hiring managers who want notes and nothing that rates the candidate.

Fathom

Fathom's free plan includes unlimited recordings, with bot-free capture on Mac (Fathom). Best for: Mac-based hiring managers replacing Read's free plan. See Fathom alternatives for its own gaps.

Otter

Otter's desktop app records without a bot on Mac and Windows, and Pro is $8.33 a month billed yearly (Otter pricing). Leave the Recruiting Agent's sentiment analysis out of decisions. Best for: the lowest-cost transcript.

Greenhouse Notetaker

Greenhouse's note taker drafts notes per scorecard question, and the interviewer adds them to their own scorecard and writes the assessment (Greenhouse). Best for: Greenhouse customers who want the human rating to stay central.

Metaview

Metaview is a recruiting platform whose Notetaker joins calls or records through a botless desktop app, and posts notes to a long list of ATSs (Metaview). Best for: recruiting teams that want interview notes in the ATS.

BrightHire

BrightHire organizes notes around competencies your team defines and drafts ATS scorecards for interviewers to review (BrightHire). Best for: in-house teams with structured interview loops on Zoom.

Interview Signal

Ours runs on Windows and Mac with no bot, builds a question guide from the job description, and fills a scorecard as the interview goes, with each score tied to the candidate's own quotes and any quote not found in the transcript removed. Weaknesses: no ATS integration, desktop only, no video, few public reviews yet, and phone screens must run through the computer. Best for: recruiters who want scores they can defend with the candidate's words.

What should you ask any vendor about candidate analytics?

  1. What does the tool measure about the candidate, beyond the words they said? Ask for the full list, including tone, sentiment, engagement, pace and "fit".
  2. Can those measures be switched off for candidate calls only, by an admin, so individual interviewers cannot turn them back on?
  3. Who sees them? If a hiring manager can open a sentiment chart, it will influence the decision whether or not anyone intends it to.
  4. Does any output feed a score or a ranking? That is the point at which AI hiring rules are most likely to apply.
  5. What will you tell candidates? If analytics stay on, your notice should say so. Our consent script covers recording; analytics need their own line.

Write the answers into your vendor review, and repeat the questions when the vendor ships a new feature, since analytics are often added to existing plans.

When should you stay with Read AI?

Stay if your company already uses Read across its meetings, you can switch off candidate-facing analytics for interviews, and you want one tool for everything. Read's advance-notice emails and opt-out are genuinely useful for candidate consent. Move if you cannot control those analytics, or if you need an ATS or phone screens. Our guide to reducing bias in interviews explains why the evidence, not the mood, should carry the decision.

Questions people ask

Why do some recruiters avoid Read AI's engagement and sentiment scores?

Read's recruiting page says it measures moments that increased engagement or decreased sentiment for the candidate. Engagement and sentiment are not job requirements and can reflect nerves, disability, accent or culture, and AI that helps evaluate candidates can bring an interview into scope for rules such as New York City Local Law 144. This is not legal advice; check with counsel.

Which Read AI alternatives do not score candidate sentiment?

As of October 2026, the pages we checked for Granola, Fathom and Greenhouse Notetaker describe transcripts, summaries and notes rather than candidate sentiment scores. Otter's Recruiting Agent and Fireflies' recruiting AI Skills do list sentiment features, so check settings if you choose them.

Is there a Read AI alternative that integrates with an ATS?

Yes. Read names no applicant tracking system as of October 2026. Greenhouse Notetaker is built into Greenhouse, and Metaview and BrightHire list many ATSs including Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever and Bullhorn. Interview Signal has no ATS integration and is pasted in by hand.

How much does Read AI cost compared with its alternatives?

As of October 2026, Read AI's Pro plan is $19.75 a month or $15 billed annually, and its free plan covers five meetings a month of up to an hour. Otter Pro is $8.33 a month billed yearly, Fathom's free plan has unlimited recordings, Granola Business is $14 a month, and Metaview Pro is $60 per user per month.
