Accounting and finance recruiters use Interview Signal to screen accountants, analysts, controllers and finance leaders against what the client really requires: the credential, the systems and the technical work go into the role's brief, and the kit's must-asks and scorecard follow it. During the call each question shows "What a strong answer contains", and the accuracy check marks technical claims green or red; afterwards the submittal keeps pay figures exactly as the candidate said them. As of October 2026 Interview Signal does not verify licenses and has no ATS integration. This describes version 0.9.10.
How do I set up a finance role?
- Press "New role" and paste the client's job description, or its link under "Paste the posting link" with "Fetch".
- Put the deal-breakers in the brief. In "What the client actually wants", write the credential, the systems and the work they will not compromise on: for example a CPA, a named ERP, consolidation experience or a close calendar (example list). The kit generator marks at most two capability questions must-ask, and only ones the brief raises; a credential the job description lists but the brief never mentions will not be one. If it ends the screen, put it in the brief or tick "Must ask" yourself.
- Pick the kit's shape. For the screen that becomes a submittal, choose "Balanced" as the "Interview type": it keeps notice period, compensation expectation and right to work as must-asks. "Technical" ("Depth in the craft. What they have built, and what went wrong in it.") gives only technical questions, with no logistics, which suits a second, deeper round.
- Set the level. "Difficulty" runs from "Easy" ("Junior. A strong answer describes doing the work well with guidance.") through "Medium" and "Hard" to "Expert" ("Staff and above. A strong answer changes how you see the problem."), or "Mixed", which rises through the interview.
- Choose the template, then generate. Pick the "Submittal template" before pressing "Generate the kit", because the template is named to the generator so the scorecard covers what that document needs. Edit the questions, the "What a strong answer contains" lines and the scorecard areas, then "Save role".
Which template fits which finance desk?
| Desk | Built-in template | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent accounting and analyst roles that turn on systems | Technical | "Depth by area" (the scorecard table), "Environment and tooling", "Compensation and notice" |
| General permanent placements | Exec one-pager | "Why they fit", "Risks and what to probe", "Compensation and logistics" |
| Interim, project and temp finance | Contract / temp | "Available from" and "Rate" in the top lines |
| CFO, finance director and controller searches | Executive search | Subtitled "Confidential candidate report"; see executive search |
An admin can copy any of them in the web account and rename the headings; see submittal templates.
How do I judge technical answers without being an accountant?
- "What a strong answer contains". The generator is told to write it in concrete terms a non-specialist can recognize, so you can tell a real account of a close or a reconciliation from a fluent one. Rewrite any line where you know better.
- The accuracy check. Pin a question whose category is Technical and the model picks out up to six factual claims from the latest answer, checks each quote is really in what the candidate said, and marks it green if it held up and red if it did not, with a reason when you rest the pointer on it. It is a reading to check, never a score, and it can be wrong on niche or recent standards. It does not run while the pinned question is Behavioural, Experience, Motivation, HR or Logistics, so it does most for a "Technical" kit, where every generated question carries that category.
- Ask the AI. A private box under the follow-ups for your own question, such as "What should a good answer about a bank reconciliation include?" (an example). It never goes in the transcript or the submittal.
- Follow-ups. Three suggestions at a time, tagged probe, clarify or evidence, each about something the candidate just said. They go after the vague parts, such as "we closed in five days" with no word on what the candidate personally owned.
- The CV. Paste it or attach a PDF or text file on the pre-interview screen; Word files are refused ("Word (.docx) files cannot be read here."). Follow-ups can then probe what it claims, and the submittal adds a risk line where the CV claims something the interview did not establish. See attaching a CV.
How does the submittal handle pay and numbers?
Compensation is the figure a client acts on first, so the rules are strict. The model is told to take every fact from the transcript, to keep every number in the units it was spoken in, and never to add a currency, unit or order of magnitude the candidate did not say: its own instruction turns "one hundred and sixty five thousand base" with no currency into "165,000 base (currency not stated)". If a currency symbol still lands on a figure when the candidate never named a currency, the app removes it, adds a note that figures are as the candidate stated them, and warns you to add the right one before sending. Anything the call did not cover is written "Not discussed." More in the client submittal guide.
What stays private on a finance desk?
- Transcripts, quotes, candidate names, notes, CVs and submittals stay on the recruiter's computer and are never uploaded to Interview Signal.
- The candidate's name and the company are sent to the AI model when it writes the submittal, and an attached CV is sent to it during the interview.
- Audio goes to a speech-to-text provider in short chunks and is not retained; the server keeps counts and durations. A data processing agreement is available on request; see the security page.
What does Interview Signal not do for accounting and finance staffing?
- No credential checks. A CPA or other credential is recorded as said, not verified.
- No skills tests. It captures audio only, so a spreadsheet exercise on a shared screen is judged from what the candidate says about it.
- The accuracy check can be wrong, and a misheard term means nothing is marked.
- No ATS integration. "Copy ATS note…" shapes notes for Bullhorn, JobAdder, Greenhouse and Lever; for other systems, paste the submittal or attach the Word file. See exports.
- Desktop only, on Windows 10 or 11 or macOS 13 or newer; phone screens must run through the computer, and there is no video.
- A newer product with few public reviews; try it on one live search first.
Which plan fits a finance desk?
As of October 2026: every account starts with 20 free minutes and no card; Pay as you go hours cost $9 for 1, $29 for 5 and $69 for 15, and never expire; one recruiter screening most weeks fits Solo at $49 a month ($468 a year), with unlimited interviews and your own roles, kits and templates; a desk of three or more fits Team at $59 per seat per month, or $49 billed yearly, which shares roles and templates and adds panels and a weekly coaching report. See pricing, then download the app. For question sets, see staff accountant phone screen questions and controller screening questions, and for other tools, the best AI note taker for accounting and finance staffing.
Questions people ask
Can a recruiter without an accounting background use Interview Signal to screen accountants?
Yes. Every kit question carries a note on what a strong answer contains, written for a non-specialist; on Technical questions the accuracy check marks the candidate's claims green or red with a short reason; and the Ask the AI box answers your own questions during the call. None of these changes a score, and the decision stays with you and the client.
Does Interview Signal verify CPA licenses or other credentials?
No. Interview Signal records what the candidate said about a credential and can raise a risk line where an attached CV claims something the interview did not establish, but it checks nothing against a licensing board or issuer. Verifying a CPA or other credential remains a separate step in your own process.
How does Interview Signal handle salary figures in a finance submittal?
Figures keep the units they were spoken in. The model writing the submittal is told never to add a currency, unit or order of magnitude the candidate did not say, so 165,000 base with no currency becomes 165,000 base (currency not stated). If a currency symbol still appears when no currency was named, the app removes it and warns you to add the right one before sending.
Which Interview Signal template suits interim and contract finance roles?
The built-in Contract / temp template, which puts Available from and Rate in its top lines and has sections for fit for the assignment, directly relevant experience, risks, logistics and evidence. Permanent roles that turn on systems knowledge fit the Technical template, with its Environment and tooling section, and CFO or controller searches can use Executive search.
